Actually, I think I took my wasted trip to Spokane pretty good (5 hrs one way to find a rolled '86 GW/360/727... for those that don't know). As it turns out, my man in spocan is in the can... literally... he was thrown in jail. I finally got through to his wife and she's holding the GW for me to look at on my 4th of July trip to Seattle. I would still like get together when I get over to the Emerald City. The Vultures are circling... I have at least four guys in Helena that want to pick the carcass clean after I'm done with it. My main man, the mechanic who's going to help me with whatever I end up swapping into the CJ7, has first choice, then you, then all others. I guess I'd better get it bought first... what's that old saying about counting you GWs before they're bought ;) BTW: One of the potential vultures who happens to be a good friend just bought a '84 Wagoneer with the I6. I can't believe how much it looks like my '86 CJ7 undr the hood... same cruddy stepper motor computer controlled BBD, same leaky plastic valve cover (even has the same triangle bolt pattern on top to take the CJs offset air breather), and same pulse air system. For those of you looking for I6 info, the CJ forums would be a good source. I'll keep you updated as this story continues to unfold. Caliper pins worn-out (those are the two things you unbolt with a 3/8" Allen to remove a caliper). Spindle bearing dry/seized. Or the Caliper needs to replaced as you guessed. I'd start with inspecting the pins, then inspect the spindle bearing, finally replace the caliper. The pins should be smooth with no ridges built-up. Getting to the spindle bearing require removing the spindle and you need to have the special 4 point spindle nut socket. -- Michael Baxter, MBaxter-at-Compuserve.com http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/MBaxter From Reno, NV USA on 11-Jun-1999 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 21:39:58 -0400 From: Michael Baxter Subject: fsj: questions 88 GW Nicholas & Susan McIntosh writes: >> so...from people that i've been talking to (not on fsj-list) i'm getting the impression that GW's are money pits. they are hell on gas. = they are constantly being fixed. and they're expensive to fix. i want t= o buy a GW, but i can't afford a money pit. what do you folks have to say for GW's. = << 4WDs in general demand more maintenance on a whole than cars in the 1st place. One other thing you ought to do is make sure the transfer case works right. Shift it into 4WD and make sure the dash switch lights. If not, it's probably a bad vacuum motor (not too bad). If it does, get the truck into 4WD-LO range with the shift lever on the floor. You have to be in 4WD-HI mode (dash light lit), moving forward about 3 MPH, trans in Neutral. You can then move the lever from 4-HI to 4-LO to make sure it engages. If if won't let you into 4-LO (or back out of it), you've got trouble. Good luck!
