I like IH easily as much as AMC) and the 21 spline 727 trannies were probably destined for those trucks (IH never ran the 904 AFAIK) I've only seen them in 80 and 81s. There was talk for a short while of a joint effort between IH and AMC, but something went wrong. I sort of remember Dodge using the 21 spline mid '70's as well. Brad wrote: I bet you are right! It wouldn't be the first time something like that happened! But that would also mean that jeep would need to come up with some 21 spline inputs for the 208/219 (probably they would just order them from NP). Another possibility would be there was some sort of supply problem with the 23 spline shaft (who know why that would happen?) and jeep took delivery of some 21 spline transmissions and ordered 21 spline t-cases accordingly? Note that these wouldn't be transmissions destined for IH, they would be the jeep version just with the IH output shaft. I know the 727 output shaft used by scout was for the D20 and D300. In both the D20 and the Scout version of the D300, there is a gear that mounts on the output shaft and stays with the transmission, not the t-case (just like FSJ TH400s with D20s). That means that the output shaft for IH 727s has some means of retaining the gear on the shaft -- either a nut or a snap ring. Would one of these shafts still work as input to a NP208/219 where the gear is part of the t-case and the shaft just slips in? I'm guessing it would, espicially if scout used a snap ring to retain the gear. IH may have used different configurations of the 727 output in different rigs with differnt t-cases, and if so ignore what I said above! - -brad Jim writes: You would have to get them from International. Same length, but 21 spline in all (probably Dodge shipped the tranny and case packs wrong and Jeep ended up with some IH units that weren't used when IH bowed out of production) A few of the guys on the other list also ran into the 21 spline problem. I bought a NP219 to put in my Eagle 2 years ago without counting the spline, and found out it was a 21 spline, so I sold it again to someone that had a 21 spline '80 FSJ. Two kids sick with fevers. Wife took 7 week old baby to emergency room at 5am, 'cause a fever at that age isn't good. I went down later, with my son (fever had gone down) by 10AM. We headed home at about 1:00, with her leaving a bit ahead of me. About 1/2 mile from home (about 45 minutes from hospital), she either fell asleep, or looked away for a second. On our narrow roads here, she managed to drop a wheel down into the ditch, going about 35MPH. BTW, this was in her 84 Grand Wagoneer, Well, that would not have been so bad, but then there was a driveway across the ditch. She hit that, popped up, and ended up hitting the embankment on the other side of the ditch, about 20 feet the other side of the driveway. The driver side wheels ended up in the ditch, and the passenger side up on the embankment, at least a 45 degree angle. I came up to the scene just after it happened, and did not see it as it was around a corner. Luckily, she and baby were both OK. Now, what about the missiles? Well, like any good wrench turner, I had lots of tools, oil, fuses, and yeah, a big lantern flashlight in the back in a milk crate. Apparently when she popped up onto the driveway, some of that stuff went up in the air. When she hit the embankment, they continued flying forward. In fact, that big lantern flashlight has some headliner fabric embedded in the grooves in the handle, and Kathy had a big bump on the back of the head. I found the flashlight on the floor on the driver's side. Please folks, if you have the same setup in your rig, take some action to put a lid on the box (action packer type maybe?), and then find some way to secure it down. We were very lucky the Mag-Lite (3-D Cell aluminum flashlight) or anything else didn't become a deadly missile. Don't let the same thing happen to you or your family. Also, don't let anyone, or do it yourself, drive when they are too tired. Pull over, take a nap. BTW, the Wagoneer is a total loss, and it has only 7K mi on a fresh, built 360 (complete Edelbrock kit) and fresh tranny. We'll be in the market for another one, probably an 88-89 with a worn motor if I buy this one back from the insurance co. James put up a list of FSJ's advertised in the Sunday paper, it should be in the digest on my server: http://www.wagoneers.com/FSJ/digests If you decide to pass on using any parts from your GW I'd be interested in the axles, xfr case, trans and engine... I've got a nice 77 Wagoneer body here that only needs a carb, as far as I know... Let me know if I can help at all... I'm not exactly close, but running over to the Peninsula is always a nice Sunday afternoon adventure. :) john At 08:39 PM 8/31/99 -0700, Allan Weidenheimer wrote: >Folks, > Last Sunday was a hell of a day for me. I spent about 40 minutes talking with the guy down in the bay area about the 80 Honcho. I'm leaning heavily in that direction. looking at about $2,500. I'm selling two computers and my 77 Wagoneer and should have it covered, which means the wife won't object. :) It's got 109,000 miles, a rebuilt .030 over 360-2v with 15,000 miles on it. the tf727 leaks oil, but shifts ok. paint is oxidized, it's the ugly brown color right now. But I've been looking at the pictures and I should be able to have it repainted around the decals to a yellow, preferablly light ivory creme. It's got a couple dings, but no rust. It's california emission tested so it'll be a breeze to license up here... estimated 12mpg, even has a tach! He said about 3,000 rpm at 60mph or so... so it must have the optional 3.31's and not the stock 2.72s. It has the NP208 xfr case, hubs on the front. It will mean flying down to the Bay Area to pick it up. Maybe I should have SuperKen check it out for me. It's about 30 minutes from his parents house. :) Or one of my xj buddies, or even 36Ken... I need to hire another admin so I can take some time off... :( If I go down for a class in the bay area I can drive it home and get reimbursed for it. :) It's also got the Jacobs ignition system on it, cruise, tilt, manual windows, a/c and so on... it's missing the roll/light bar, but has the brush guard. The a/c needs charging/fixin'. has an am/fm cassette and a radio shack 40ch cb. He's got a mix match of tires on it, all 31's though. So I might through a good set of Michelin 31x10.5's on it from Costco down there for the drive home... not sure yet... Too bad they don't make a 31x9.5 :) I wonder if 33x9.5 BFG Mud Terrains would fit without a lift... any ideas? My plans for it are to put the electric GW seats in, paint it light yellow, new tires, a nice toolbox for the bed, or maybe a canopy... or a tonneau cover and tool box. and of course a few inches of lift. I will need to get the 77 wag sold pretty quick, guess I'm gonna go and buy the rebuild for it so I don't have to mess with the manifold, no sense digging deeper than I need to. With the carb, tailgate and headliner fix, some elbow grease and install the "new" michelin tires on it, it should sell pretty quick. This means I won't need to sell Fritz... still have an "econo" car for commuting and a functional FSJ for our expected harsh winter. :) SUggestions on the best tires for a J10 Honcho? I'm leaning toward Michelin LTX 31x10.5s, or maybe the BFG MT's, the stock size is 31x10.5s... I'm looking for excellent street and highway ride, off-road traction isn't a big factor, m+S rating is. I want QUIET and nice ride over traction. :) john - ----------------------------------------------------- john-at-wagoneers.com http://www.wagoneers.com ...don't leave life without Jesus, please!
