Here's a test for your long distance diagnostic skills... I bought a tank of garbage from a little Hadji Mart couple of weeks ago, and my truck was choking and spitting really bad on it. I eventually diluted it down enough for the truck to run again, but it never seemed to clear up entirely. Over the course of a couple of weeks, a hurricane, and very little driving, the truck got to the point that it was really skipping and loosing power on acceleration. Then I put a tank of BP in it which got the engine pinging, to go with the missing, and just for good measure it started to backfire through the carb to the point that it would seem to almost stop the engine. I could hear the engine miss at idle, and it wouldn't accelerate for beans, but it would cruise with minimal missing. On the way home from work the next day, I tried putting in a container of STP Octane Booster, but it was totally useless, so I filled the tank up with high test, and headed home. I finally got a chance to work on the truck by flashlight, and started looking for problems. The cap & rotor seemed to be in good shape, and I cleaned any carbon scoring off of the inside contacts. I checked the vacuum advance mechanism, and looked for vacuum leaks. The vacuum advance hose was off the carb so I reconnected that, but I didn't think that that would be the problem. That would give me too little advance at cruise, not too much on acceleration. I pulled the convenient plugs (1,3), and they were a nice powdery gray. I vaguely remember that they should be tan, but there wasn't any obvious problems with those plugs, so I reinstalled them, and gave up before the mosquitoes turned me into a dry corpse. The next day, the truck ran absolutely perfectly. It didn't burble, skip, hop, jump, period. It ran perfectly smooth at idle, cruise, hard or light acceleration. Not having a lot of time and slowly learning my Dad's suggestion that "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," I left the truck alone that night. The next day, the truck was missing again. (Oh God, please give me a break! I've got a 95 Stratus with a intermittent transmission slip that the local shop wants to fix for $2000, a '69 Charger with an intermittent ignition fault, and now a Jeep with a disappearing miss.) So I got home, and started checking the plug wires for cracks. I guess the easy way to do this would be to start the engine and grab the wires until one really hurt, but I just tried rolling them and looking for cracks. I didn't find anything, and decided to change my Dodge's tranny fluid before shelling out $2000. Incidentally, I didn't check the vacuum advance line to see if it had fallen off again. (It was kind of big for the fitting it was attached to on the carb, and it did go to other things as well.) This morning the truck was skipping badly again. To the point that I didn't want to pull out into traffic. OK, I'm open to any and all suggestions. Help, please! Could be crack in the distributor cap, which you can't always see, or a bad rotor, which I don't think I've ever actually had happen. More likely on a GWag, though, is the ignition module. Only way to check it is to replace it; fortunately, they're fairly cheap (can't remember if they're in the $15 or $30 range), very easy to replace (two plugs -- hardest part is if the three bolts holding it on are frozen from age), and if your car is missing out that bad at the time, the results are instantaneous. I've had two of these go out, one one each of two separate GWags, and both went out when the GWag was twelve years old. Since you have an '88 (according to your sig), that makes it just about time to expect to replace it in my book. (My current GWag is also an '88, so I'm planning to buy one in the next few months to have when it starts doing that.) Next possibility: If you suspect it's bad gas (remember, multiple factors can make it act up more and can be a lot harder to track down), put one or two bottles of Heet in it -- they're usually $0.50-1.00 each, and in the case of gas with water in it, it helps considerably. Still won't solve your problems entirely until you get that gas worked out of the system, but makes it much more driveable. When I got a bad tank, I used a bottle or two, and it took about 10-20mi of driving before it cleared up noticeably, and as I mentioned, it still acted up the rest of the tank. But that's one advantage of _not_ having fuel injection -- I grabbed a five-gal gas jug (filled) and drove the car til it ran out of gas. (Also a handy way to find out exactly where that quirky gas gauge runs out.) My last suggestion: Timing could be screwed up. If the bolt on the distributor is loose, it can rotate back and forth, giving you really bad pinging and stuff, but occasionally clearing up. This happened to me recently after we had reset the timing due to slight pinging -- I don't think he tightened the bolt right afterward (and the bolt on the GWag is a pain to get the right angle on and put force on it without stripping the bolt head), and over a few days, it got bad again and ended up even worse than it was in the first place. So I adjusted it by hand (no timing light), which was a lot slower, but I got it right (no pinging) the very first try (not the first turn, but before I tightened the bolt and took it for a drive). My method: Adjust the distributor just a bit, get in, put it in drive with the brake on, and sit at the lower revs for a few seconds. The goals for telling how well it was adjusted were (a) no missing out and (b) minimal vibrations (look at the passenger seat and see how bad it is shaking). Sounds pretty unprofessional, and might not work for everybody, but worked for me. (If you have a timing light, heck, adjust it to the 10-14deg range; pretty much just have to try it at various places in that range and see what works best.) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thunder is a rich source of loudness. - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Oct 1999 08:30:05 -0700 From: Thunderbird Subject: EH? Here's what I've got: - - '83 Wagoneer, Limited. White. Front end body damage, minimal rust, interior is rough but intact. Both the '78 and the '83 came from New Mexico so there is only a small amount of rust in the left rear section behind the rear tire (that I know of). Engine is strong, Edelbrock intake with Stock carb, but has a lobe going flat on the cam, Edelbrock cam is in spare engine. Tranny (built for towing and offroad 3000 miles), t-case with DNC conversion (rebuilt 4000 miles ago), axles w/3.50 gears (inspected Professionally 4000 miles ago), and drive shafts (new u-joints), are from a '78 wide track Cherokee. Exhaust has 500 miles on it, headers, 2-1/4" pipe to Flow Master "Y" to 3" cat and muffler ($600. in exhaust system alone). B&M Z-gate floor shifter. The front leafs are new, and there are 2" blocks in the rear. There is some vibration due to the pinion angle, currently, but it can be fixed easily because the vehicle is fitted with custom clamp on leaf pads. There is a whining noise that I believe may be wheel bearings that will have to be taken care of fairly soon. Does not include the '83 rear bumper. Also included: - -'78 wide track front clip (hood, grill, radiator holder, wheel wells, fenders, everything from the front doors forward) - -Spare AMC 360 WITH EDELBROCK CAM all accessories but the AC compressor and PS pump. Good start on rebuild. - -2 2bbl intake manifolds and 2 sets of stock exhaust manifolds - -'78 Cherokee doors W/glass - -'78 tailgate with glass - -Rhino Chaser Grill. - -NEW, still in the package, weather striping for tailgate. - -I'm sure I have more.... Take the whole deal now for $1000 (obo). It has Oregon tags good for over 1 year, and passed DEQ testing with flying colors (on the dyno). A: The only fuel stuff I use other than heet (for water in lines, but I stopped buying gas in those places) is Redline fuel system treatment (since Bitron isn't available everywhere). If that doesn't cure it, then you will probably have to dismantle your carb and rebuild it (after looking at the wires under the hood at night in as pitch black as you can find for spark runoff) I finally got a chance to work on the truck by flashlight, and started looking for problems.
