I had the same thing happen to my Grand Wag (the same week I got it back from the trans shop for a new 727!). Turned out that the infamous tailgate keyswitch had chosen to break and short out, creating a constant draw to the tailgate motor which drained the battery and made the alternator squeal when I jumped it. I'd pull the breakers to the tailgate (there are two of them in the fusebox) and see if your drain goes away. If so, you're about to embark on a journey into inner space (the inner space of your tailgate :( ) Clark Novak 87 GW ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2000 21:51:20 -0800 From: john Subject: Re: fsj: Oil and Water pump Advice At 09:40 PM 2/15/00 EST, UrbFarmer-at-aol.com wrote: >Temp gauge is fine ever since I found an almost new radiator at the bone >yard. :-) >Reason I balk is because when I was tightening the belts on my new alternator >the other day, I swear the water pump shaft moved. What might help is finding a good mechanic that knows his plumbing. :) There will be a line going to the vacuum advance, there will be some going to temperature switches on the manifold and onto the air cleaner... some heading toward the cab to control the heater system, one to the cruise and so on... Take an inventory of what you have under the hood that has vacuum lines and start figuring it out. :) Since it's an aftermarket carb it gets more interesting... best wishes... BTW, you might want to consider replacing all those lines every year or so... the 360's are really picky about their vacuum connections. :) also, you might be able to find the vacuum diagrams at a library, or at a independent repair shop that has a set of manuals... If you can find an honest wrench he may straighten it out for you real quick and cheap... if he's not honest he'll do his best to make it sound real serious and complicated... finding a good/honest wrench is not an easy thing to do, and not for the faint of heart... john - ----------------------------------------------------------- john-at-wagoneers.com http://www.wagoneers.com http://wagoneers.com/83stepside/ (Superdawg) http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/Jx000s/marks-67-J3000/ (son's FSJ) http://wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html http://www.wagoneers.com/book-info.html Snohomish, WA, where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... - ----------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2000 22:09:41 -0800 From: john Subject: fsj: Re: Help! Thanks, >Jim523-at-prodigy.net It's been a while since I've troubleshot an NP229... the last time, no wait, the 2nd to the last time, :), it was the vacuum switch on the side of the transfer case itself. Since I don't have a diagram, and don't trust them anyways because there are so many hacks out there working on these older rigs that it's less rare to find a rust free rig than one that hasn't been "modified" in the vacuum department. I'd start at the manifold, making sure all the vacuum lines are good, tight and have good rubber. Check other vacuum items, heater controls, and possibly the cruise control. Then I'd check the vacuum line coming into the switch under the dash. Is there vacuum coming in? Is it pretty strong? If you have a gauge, take a reading on the input and then the output line. Then follow that line, if possible, or just head underneath. Check the switch on the driver's side of the xfr case, is there vacuum coming in? when you attach and disconnect the line do you hear or feel anything in the transfer case? I'd also check the vacuum motor on the front axle. Is there vacuum coming into the switch? Ok, another test, or additional testing, would be to jack up all four wheels, run the rig... (CAREFULLY!!!! make sure NOTHING or no one is in front of it... aim the rig toward an open area... have a helper INSIDE, sitting still to nail the brakes at the slightest hint of it coming off the stands.... (you can do this solo, but when you go underneath, only have the rig idling slowly, keep yourself away from the path of those tires should it come off the stands... not recommended, but it works and I've done it... many times... JUST NEVER GET UNDER OR NEAR the front of any of the tires... watch lower hanging parts of the rig and be ready to lay flat and keep your limbs clear of stuff... People die doing stuff like this, so be very cautious and be agile and as nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs!) Ya also have to be ready to get out from underneath and chase the rig to stop it too... I usually aim my rigs up the "Snohomish Snowy covered hill climbing hill... most rigs can't make it up with a driver...) Anyway, the idea here is to see if you really are getting 4wd or not. Ok, with it in 4wd and idling, look at the front driveshaft, is it turning? Is it turning as fast as the rear driveshaft? If the front driveshaft is turning, are the front wheels? Are they turning as fast as the rear? If not, or not at all, then stop the wheels, preferably via the inside assistant, as climbing out from underneath your rig is a pretty good workout... Stop the wheels, and flip the low range lever to engage it... (I'm not sure if it will let you our not without an interlock connection... just don't know and I ain't gonna walk out to my office to dig through dirty shop manuals at 10:30pm to find out... ;) especially the way I'm dressed right now. Ok, the idea here is to see if the front/rear turn equally... Now, for the synopsis of the diagnosis and the prognosis of the analysis... :) If the front was turning, but not very fast, and the front wheels were turning, but not as fast, then the viscous coupler could be going... If the front axle was turning, but the wheels weren't, then it's most likely something related to the vacuum motor, a very common and not terribly expensive repair... the last one I replaced cost me $18... of course that was about 10 years ago... :) I have no idea on the cost of the viscous coupler... Ok, if the front wheels turned slower than the rear in 4wd high, check 4wd low... if equal, then that confirms a slipping viscous coupler, because in low range it's "locked". Another idea would be to get one of those cool vacuum testers and try to operate the vacuum switches directly with the rig off... hope this helps... john - ----------------------------------------------------------- john-at-wagoneers.com http://www.wagoneers.com http://wagoneers.com/83stepside/ (Superdawg) http://wagoneers.com/FSJ/Jx000s/marks-67-J3000/ (son's FSJ) http://wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html http://www.wagoneers.com/book-info.html Snohomish, WA, where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... - ----------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2000 23:15:13 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: fsj: Re: xj-digest V1 #719 On Tue, 15 Feb 2000, xj-digest wrote: >-->Marc Bowers used to have an 85 XJ (Project Tuff Enuf) and was an assistant >-->editor at Cherokee America back when John was the editor-in-chief. Marc and I think he found my old 65 J200 Stepside... but the guy wouldn't sell it... :( Marc ran across another 67 J3000 around the same time I found my son's... I though he'd bought the one I'd been looking at until I saw the J3000 nosing out of a barn... I haven't seen Marc's J3000 yet... what gets even funnier is my son's name is Mark. Anyway, I'll be heading down to ARB in a few weeks and hope to see Marc's J-truck... I got to visit with Marc last year at the PNW event down at Harvey Field in Snohomish. He was driving the ARB-USA jeep around... On the XJ vs. FSJ issue, Marc pushed his little XJ to the limits and then some... We have both dealt with the stress cracks and stuff related to the uniframe construction. Paul Weitlauf has further shown us that other parts can come loose. :) The XJ is an awsome trail rig, I honestly feel that a stock Xj is superior to even a mildly modified Yj. They ramp better and seem to do better on the trail, from my experiences and observations, limited as they are. :) However, in the hands of a certified Jeep nut a YJ can be made into a far superior, AND more durable trail rig. An XJ pushed to those limits has some problems, not unsolvable, but problems nonetheless... Marc figured a Full Size Rig would hold up better for hard trail use. I know several folks that have worked over a Wagoneer and made it do some impressive things on the trail. Of course when they do that, they make some trade-offs... While I love my FSJ, I also realize that it's size and weight presents some unique challenges up here in the Pacific Northwest... :) Shoot, on some of the trails I"m barely able able to squeak the little wagoneer through... There ain't no way Superdawg is gonna be given an opportunity to smash his rare fiberglass fender flares against a tree or ledge... especially since he's rolling along on a 115" wheelbase. :) So, that means my trail rigs is my wife's jeep... the little wagoneer, an XJ. However, come August 2002, Superdawg and I will be rolling towards Ouray, Colorado for the Anniversary celebration of the Full Size Jeep... My son Mark has agreed to drive his 67 J3000 (if he still has it by then, shoot, if I still have Superdawg by then... ;) as far as Moab... I hope he comes the rest of the way... It's gonna be an FSJ event like none other... :) Anyway... What's better for a trail? An XJ, YJ or SJ??? It depends on the pilot, the pilot's concern for the rig, and how well it's built. The bottom line is this, no matter what the model designator, a Jeep is a Jeep! Some may be better in one area than another, but they are all better than a non-Jeep... imnsho... ;) I still can't make up my mind which is better, an SJ or an Xj... so I solved the problem this way... I have one of each. :) But I think I'm gonna be in trouble at some point... because I also like the WJ and I keep looking at those CJ5's... My wife is pretty understanding about all this... However, when she makes a comment about selling my rig and buying something decent, she usually excludes "her" jeep, the little wagoneer... ;) If they made a production Diesel Jeep, or Mercedes put a Diesel in the M Class (stateside), it'd be a no-brainer... :) (no spagetthi chassis dodge for me, in spite of the awesome Cummins...)
