I just bought a '74 yesterday. Somebody posted it to the list, but not sure if they're actually on the list or if somebody forwarded it for them. Anyway, it's about 1.5hrs from me (in Iowa!), has a 401, and just needs some transmission work to get it running (well, that and better tires...). Saw it yesterday, and it starts up fine and sounds great. It's yellow and has a fair amount of surface rust, but only a couple places where it really goes through. And there's a place in Marshalltown (less than an hour away, and where my parents live) that does great work fixing rust and painting (you pay for it and they take a long time, but that's one thing they do very well the first time), and I was planning on eventually (in 6 months?) having it fixed up and repainted black. Those pics pretty much confirm my decision; that should be exactly what the '74 looks like when I get done with it. Anybody know what it'll cost to get the interior completely re-done? I should have most (maybe all) of the pieces, but I don't even know how a professional does it... I assume it would get brand new carpet, but how do they do the leather and upholstery? New material? I figure I'll get it done right, and probably change the (interior) color to a medium-dark grey. I'm wildly guessing it'll cost about the same as it will to get the exterior done right -- probably around $4K, give or take $1K. Yes, that means a total of almost $10K in the vehicle, but I should end up with a great, reliable, beautiful vehicle. Best way to do that when you're paying for it in stages is to start with a vehicle with good, strong, reliable "guts" (engine, drive train, etc.) and then work on the "pretty" details. And it _is_ paying for it in stages... With a solid powerful vehicle when I need it the entire time. :) Incidentally, I'll be swapping out a bunch of parts from my '85 (see http://www.public.iastate.edu/~dsblack/85GW/ for pics) and then getting rid of the '85, even giving it to the junkyard if I need to. But I don't know what parts will be available yet, so I can't offer anything to the list yet. (For those that know me, of course I'm not getting rid of my '88! For pics of that, see http://www.public.iastate.edu/~dsblack/88GW/ .) I'll probably take pics of the '74 as I make modifications. :) (Most of the door stuff, including the gate, will be gone from the '85, as well as many interior pieces, like the seats. And I'll probably keep those wheels, too. So in the end, the main things that will be left will probably be the engine and stuff -- transfer case is toast, and don't know about the transmission; it's actually probably ok.) Interestingly, the '74 I just got is being sold because the transmission (rebuilt only a year or two ago) has a hole in the case, slapped by the front drive shaft after the double cardon (sp?) U-joint blew. By coincidence, this is the exact same U-joint that was going out and causing my '88 to shudder in 4wd earlier this winter. So now I know _exactly_ what would've happened to my '88 if I hadn't had it fixed in time! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Winding through the hot night Without my headlights 20/20 hindsight -- The Bangles - -------------- Dan Black ------------------------- dan-at-black.org -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Mar 2000 09:50:08 -0800 From: john Subject: fsj: National PRO-OHV Call-in Day Set For Tuesday March 7th please pass along... john Subject: National PRO-OHV Call-in Day Set For Tuesday March 7th http://www.speedvision.com/pub/articles/motorcycles/09inews/000303a.html - ---------------------------------------------------- john-at-wagoneers.com http://www.wagoneers.com http://www.freegift.net/ - ---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Mar 2000 09:51:41 -0800 From: john Subject: Re: fsj: interior parts believe it or not, JC Whitney has carpeting for the full size jeeps... and headliner material... and soundproofing sheets with reflective coating...
