I'll keep that info as a possible option, but I'm looking for something a bit less expensive. Such as axles that haven't been rebuilt that I could/might/maybe find in a salvage yard. I like working on cars and trucks, but it is difficult explaining to my wife why I need to spend so much money on a "mature" truck that I can't yet drive when I could spend less to buy a truck that is already driveable. Phillips Or as Madonna sang "like a virgin swapping for the very first time..." :-) OK, here is the drill on axle swaps: 1. Does it measure the same [as your present axle] distance inside backing plate /inside backing plate? If it doesn't, you may be able to live with a little wider, but not narrower. 2. Are the spring perches and shock mounts in the same places as your present axle and are they the same size, shape etc...? If not, can you get the old ones cut off of yours and welded onto the new axle at a reasonable price? 3. Same lug pattern and bolt circle ? 4. Same rear u-joint yoke as current, or is a change-over available? 5. Will the brakes hook up, both the hydraulics and the parking cable? 6. Is it the same gear ratio as your front diff? Don't rely on the tag, count the turns and do the math. 7. Better yet, BEFORE you plunk your cash down, make them pull the cover, inspect the diff, and count the teeth. If the gear oil looks like chocolate milk, pass. It has sucked in water and if it was run much afterwards, it's toast. There you have Uncle Kim's wisdom on swapping axles. kim '80 Wagoneer "J0E", 360 v2,T-727,NP219 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 08 Mar 2000 12:31:38 -0600 From: "Landon Tesar" Subject: fsj: Jeep P'up fer sale This really sounds too good to be true.
