From: "Ray Drouillard" >>CNG is natural gas and is considered a longer term solution not to mention cleaner. With the current mandate for alternative fuels CNG convenience will be forthcoming in the not too distant future. (Can you say fuel at home for about a $0.50 a gallon?) A: The price is great, and I have done some Ford/Dodge van and car conversions in Canada (fleet work) and the cost to operate was about 5 cents a mile, factoring in maintenance. Ray wrote: >That is beautiful music to the ears of an FSJ owner! >>There are lots of approved systems right now including some factory systems. Seeing as how Federal Law has mandated CNG be available and a % of factory cars be so equipped, I would think CNG would be the better long term choice if you can get past the short term inconvenience. Inconvenient for long trips, perhaps... but you can get a CNG compressor that will compress the "city gas" that you use to heat your home and feed it to the modified scuba tank in your vehicle. Just hook it up every night and you have a full tank of gas (not gasoline - methane) every morning. A: The Naz..errr State of Washington HATES alternate fuel vehicles (I think they equate them with "alternative lifestyles") and they charge $1500 a year EXTRA for tabs to cover their "lost fuel tax revenue". (I don't know about you guys, but Elmo uses only $600 a year in gas at $1.30 a gallon!) The pumps for home use are not available that I've been able to find here. (If I go for a stroker in Elmo, w/o mods then I NEED high octane!) >>Also, you can make your own natural gas. In fact, you do every time you eat beans :) I have often joked about putting a vacuum cleaner under the seats of the GW and saying "Beans for dinner tonight - we're going for a ride in the Jeep!". A: Reminds me of the ethnic jet fighter cartoon I drew in high school. (I wasn't as PC then!) We had a French teacher substitute called Mr Lebe, and we called him Mr Bean (WAAYYY before the Rowland character of that name, but similar) >>Seriously, it's mainly a matter of putting a bunch of organic material (lawn clippings, garden trash, table scraps, du-du, etc) into an airtight container along with the appropriate bacteria. The resultant gas is then drawn off, cleaned, and compressed. A: FWIW, you DON'T want any household cleaners, meat or animal fat in there! It's counter productive. (check out septic tanks and you'll see phosphates destroy them!) >>Methane produces about half of the CO2 (greenhouse gas) that is produced by gasoline, and burns even cleaner than propane. Also, any methane created by digesting organic matter has no impact on the level of CO2 in the atmosphere because the process of growing the organic matter pulls as much CO2 out of the air as is later released by burning it. A: One other point is that the rotting matter will release the methane, whether it is gathered or not! (How about a vacuum to catch all those cow poots and save the ozone while we're at it?) There are a couple rest areas on I-5 that are powered by solar and methane produced by the visitors. >Imagine this: You are driving your FSJ and burning methane that you produced at home for free. Some greenie in a honda sneers at your big dirty gas-wasting FSJ. You sneer back and say "Are you still burning fossil fuels? Do you know how much carbon dioxide you are dumping into our atmosphere?" A: Not to mention all the pollution his newer car made being born than an already existing vehicle built before they were all plastic? (And usually made by destroying one of our beloved FSJs, further releasing bad chemicals) Other advantages: Methane has an octane of about 130. That means that you can supercharge your 360 or 400, install 11.5:1 pistons, and still have no problems with ping. You can remove the catalytic converter and it'll still be cleaner than any gasoline burning vehicle. AND... You can do all of this even in the people's republic of California. The smog nazis love alternate fuel vehicles. A: Like I said, they don't love them here! Even electric cars have an extra tax added (because of the batteries) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JimBlair, Seattle,WA 1983 4.2L Chero 4dr http://homepages.go.com/~carnuck/carnuck.html Pics: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=13998&Auth=false ================================= ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Mar 2000 11:15:31 -0800 (PST) From: Carnuck-at-webtv.net (James Blair) Subject: Re: fsj: And another thing... Because the pump and hoses are virtually directly above the steering box, the box is often incorrectly diagnosed with a leak. Clean everything up on that corner of the engine until is shines and then take it for a short drive. Then look for your leak. The PS pump pressure runs well in excess of 1,000 PSI. As a result, the hoses should be changed as a part of regular maintenance. I'd say every 60,000 miles or so. If either hose bursts/leaks you'll be buying a new pu= mp along with the hoses if you're lucky enough that you don't have a fire fr= om the PS fluid spraying on the driver's side exhaust. True story-- The entire left front underside of my FSJ was coated in p/s fluid and accumulated dirt and grime. It was at least 1/4" thick on my frame aroun= d the p/s box. All along I'd assumed it was just bad seals making for a leaky = box. = Wrong-o! Duh! = I kept the newer, cleaner steering box but I also went promptly down to Che= ckers and found a replacement pressure hose. Problem solved. They always say those Saginaw boxes leak a lot... maybe it is really due = to neglected pressure hoses instead? (Epilogue--later I went back under to find more fluid on my p/s box.
