I just installed a good used TH400 in a Chev 4x4 for $500 INCLUDING a tranny! (I have another used Chev TH400 sitting here from the 1 ton '75 I'm parting for my buddy. He wants $200 for it, but it won't fit the Jeep engine. I believe it was originally a diesel in front, because the torque converter has 6 holes. It was behind a 350 industrial) PS I'm passing the D44 info on to the AMC guys again. From: Obi-Wan To recap: I've got a '77 Wag, 401, TH400, BW1339 with a Mile Marker part-time kit. When I first start up the truck in cold weather (20-30 F), the tranny seems very reluctant to transfer power to the wheels until it warms up. Regardless of how how I rev the engine, the truck will just barely crawl forward when pulling away from a dead stop. It generally takes a few minutes to get back to normal. It seems to disappear faster if I'm driving than if I'm sitting in the driveway warming up the engine, but that could be my imagination. It's almost like the torque converter is allowing way too much slippage at first, or the stall speed is becoming a very fuzzy line. Any idea what might be causing this? The tranny has plenty of good- looking fluid. It has now worsened to the point where it won't move at all under its own power. It's been sitting dead in my garage for a few weeks. Tranny oil treatment didn't help. New vacuum modulator valve didn't help. The problem seemed to start right after I had the custom exhaust installed - -- could they have screwed something up then? Could it be something as simple as a clogged filter? Anyway, I finally got around to taking it to a tranny shop. Without opening it up (apparently that would cost me), they said it probably needed a rebuild. They wanted about $500 for the rebuild (mostly labor) and about $500 for 9.8 hours labor just to remove & install the tranny, for a total of $1035. Does this sound reasonable? I could probably find another tranny from a parts rig for less than $500 and install it myself, but I simply don't have the time right now, and won't until September or so. This isn't my primary vehicle, but neither the wife nor I want it sitting dead in our driveway for six months. Selling the Jeep with a dead tranny would probably lose us over $1000 (spent $2100 on it so far), so we're out the money either way. Am I correct in thinking that a freshly rebuilt tranny would be much more desireable than an original tranny that seemed to work just fine? Any input would be appreciated. =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0= =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0= =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0-- Obi-Wan =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0= =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0'95.5 YJ, '77 Wag - -- Ben "Obi-Wan" Hollingsworth =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 =A0 obiwan-at-jedi.com "You know, he kind of looks like Yoda" -- Jim Davis, about my baby Micah =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0An= ybody want to buy a Jeep XJ Dana 44 rear axle? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JimBlair, Seattle,WA 1983 4.2L Chero 4dr http://homepages.go.com/~carnuck/carnuck.html Pics: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=3D13998&Auth=3Dfalse =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D= =3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D=3D ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 14:57:32 EST From: RKH911-at-aol.com Subject: fsj: Spotting Saw a ~87 White GW (Tinted Window's) in Walnut Creek, Ca yesterday (I can't help but check em out when I come across em).
