Subject: fsj: RE: Re: "The Bear Paw Canoe Co." > Doug - > Are you building canoes? About 4 years ago I got this idea that once our youngest starts school and I get some time to work with I'd like to take a stab at building and selling canoes. I'm not sure how the market would be here since everybody's into "power" boats, but it would be cool if I could make it work. I bought stock in Old Town just in case I never get my chance. Ben Williams '71 Wagoneer '78 F-250 4x4 Yeah I started building canoes about 5 years ago. The money really is not great... I make much more with my regular woodworking and even MUCH more with the daycare :-) The problem with canoes is several fold, first you have to find the market, then you have to market your product against everything from motor boats to aluminum canoes and everything in between, and then comes the actual building of the canoes which in and of itself is not difficult but getting the quality up to the level of other builders does take some time..... time that you'll want to be reimbursed for and NO ONE will pay you for. I sell for half of what others are building strippers for and I barely have a market, and my canoes are at least as nice as ANY builder selling in the 3000-4000 dollar range. I go to a few boat shows and thousands of people walk by and are truely impressed with the canoes, they just don't want one. You'll sell a few canoes but mostly you'll here more canoe stories than you ever thought possible and people will think your really cool cuz' your a canoe builder but you might sell a few and there is some money to be made..... drop me an email if you have any specific questions, I've dealt with just about every canoe building situation you can imagine so although I'm not Phil Greene I do have quite a bit of useless canoe building knowledge :-) Doug ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2000 11:18:42 -0800 (PST) From: Carnuck-at-webtv.net (James Blair) Subject: Re: fsj: cool FSJ! Jeep redesigned the frames in '74 and '76, but I don't know if that was spring-lengths alone, or distances between spring perches. The rear axle wouldn't be too much of a problem; you could cut off the old perches and weld on a new set at the proper angle. The front might be trickier, as the passenger-side perch is incorporated into the differential carrier and can't be easily relocated. If the perches are compatible in spacing, then these would be good axles. They are Dana 44's, which would be strong enough. The J-20 used a Dana 60 for its rear axle, which is heavier-duty; it all depends what you're going to do with your truck. ________________________________________________ Bob Barry MailTo:RBarry-at-Providence.Edu http://studentweb.providence.edu/~rbarry/wheels/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Mar 2000 23:33:27 -0600 From: "R.J.
