I've asked 'em about this and, apparently, you can get an exemption if it's over 20 yrs old OR you can show that it's a financial hardship! I oughta tell them their stupid a-at-# rules are causing the hardship. You think the inspection stations would notice the shiny chrome manifold and question it? I have been looking for some 12" x 2" drums with the 5 lug pattern for over a year now for my '73 J-4600. >From what I can tell, my '73 was the last vehicle and last year that these drums were used. I have heard that you can get the shoes (etc....) at NAPA. If you ask for the drums though, they just look at you funny and start talking in an annoyingly condescending voice because they can't find it in their books and therefore you must not know what you are talking about. The other options I have been looking at, when I have time (buying a house, Army Reserves.........) are: 1. Disk Brake conversion - Unfortunately, I haven't found any companies that do this that has anything for trucks. Much less my '73 J-4600. I am in the process of drawing my axle flanges, axle shafts, etc.. on AutoCAD so that I can send a drawing to see if they have anything that will fit/work. 2. Backing Plate Swap - Working on my second machinist to see if he can do the work. 3. Axle Swap - Looking for axles that will fit my truck. If any of the above pans out, I will have three worn drums available. (The fourth was cracked through and across the entire braking surface when I bought my truck.) I don't know if they can be cut down or not. I haven't measured them, nor do I know the minimum thickness they can be safely cut to. If you find out anything, let me know.
