This all depends on wether or not you want fuel injection. Most salvage yards will sell you a whole truck or the complete drivetrain at a decent price, but don't get into an engine conversion unless you are willing to spend a few dollars. I put an engine and tranny from a 1993 Camaro into my 1990 XJ. This worked out great, but I ended up spending more than I had expected, also a lot more time. Part of this was do to the multiport injection. In my opinion, the drivetrain from an 80's Suburban with four wheel drive and throttle body injection is an excellent swap. I paid two grand for the motor and tranny out of the camaro, it had low miles, and the guy dropped it off at my house. I took everything that I would possibly need. So if you have another car and the time to do the swap, a grand wagoneer should be pretty easy compared to an XJ. I have done a couple engine swaps, so I'd be glad to help you out with any questions.
