You can get lots of work done to heads to improve flow like unshrouding the valves (clearing away the leftover casting material that blocks air flow, but careful not too much!) Raising and opening the intake ports to match the gaskets will increase the airflow and volumetric efficiency by making the air flow straighter into the cylinder, while opening the bottom will slow it down by making more of an angle. The bottom part of the guide casting can break loose, especially if the timing chain went before and the valve clipped the piston or caught something going into the cylinder and got bent. It'll try to bend the guide when it goes back up, but since it's cast iron which doesn't bend, it splits and pieces chew up your motor. Valve seats that are installed in a non-heated head can come loose too, and bounce around in the cylinder and bust things up. A big chunk of carbon that lets go from maybe the PCV system can pound spark plugs flat too and beat the piston tops as well as get caught in the open valve, so it gets hit by the piston. (Am I scaring you guys enough yet? This is why I decarbon my motors twice a year!) I've also worked on motors that were rebuilt, and driven a year or so, then on sudden heavy accel, it starts banging like RJs, open them up and find a bolt or nut that had been left inside the intake and sat there quietly all that time came loose and beat the motor to bits! I wrote: =A0=A0The engine block you save WILL be your own! A piece of carbon bouncing back and forth will do that too. (>snip<) You may have a valve guide that split and is letting pieces into the cylinders to bounce around. DistantDrummer wrote: ..............................................Someone educate me: Please. I thought valve guides were part of the cast head. Non removeable integral piece of iron. Are they instead sleeves that can be replaced. How common is a valve guide spitting into pieces and what could cause such a thing to occur? On a similar subject is valve lash when the valve guide is wollered out of round needing reaming maybe causing the valves to rattle around . I see people mention valve seals , are these aka oil caps , oil crowns, valve crowns or something like that and if they are made of plastic like ive heard (I think) could that be? and what could they seal and why ? Lastly I have heard that valve jobs are not done anymore .Is this because of modern gasoline, electronic ignitions, better steel,or what? Got socket, got extension, got ratchet. Oh, it's 14mm, not 9/16. OK, get other socket. Oh, it's stuck. Hmm. Well, I'll get the P'Blaster, and let it soak. Soak. Ok, let's try again, still stuck. I don't want to strip the nut, or twist off the stud. Hmm. Ok, more soak. I know, let's get impact wrench - yeah, he'll loosen anything. More soak. 15 min. later: bam-bam-bam-bam. No budge. 15 seconds of bam-bam. Hey it's loosening. bam bam. Ok, it's off. Now let's clean up the threads on the nut and the stud, and put it back on and, hey, this thing is sliding right on to the stud. Crud. The P'Blaster ate all the threads which had corroded together away, and it disintegrated when impacted. I'm open to suggestion: 1. Put some new threads on the stud, and put it back together - requires dropping the exhaust. Would 5/16-18 work ? 2. Take the exhaust manifold off and put it on a bench and remove the studs and replace them - requires manifold removal and finding the right studs. 3. Find someone on the list who wants to trade manifolds and a few bucks to do the work in #2, also requires manifold removal - which looks a little tight on that side. So far, I've messed up three components that should have turned but didn't - radiator drain plug valve (the tee does not turn the valve, have to remove the valve to drain, should buy a new one), the threads on the damper portion of the transmission mount (little nuts turned, and big nut doesn't, I tried double nutting - bad idea jeans) and now the exhaust manifold stud threads are shot. I can tell this is going to be fun. I did avoid forcing the coolant drain plugs on the block open - I think they've been epoxied. If this wer= This is certainly true. My '78 had a TERRIBLE oil-burning problem when I first got it; on start-up, the truck would be *engulfed* in blue smoke, and a number of plugs were badly fouled. I pulled the valve-covers; one side was simply clogged solid, while the other side dumped about a quart of oil that it had been holding back (the engine had been shut off for over a day). I cleaned out the clogged-solid drainback holes on both sides, and now there is only a slight puff on startup. A quart every sixty miles is REALLY severe loss, though; if you were burning that much oil, you should be able to see it out the tailpipe (the 1.7L VW motor in my old Horizon used a quart of oil every 200 miles, and left a trail like a skywriter...). ________________________________________________ Bob Barry MailTo:RBarry-at-Providence.Edu http://studentweb.providence.edu/~rbarry/wheels/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2000 22:26:31 -0500 From: "R.J. Also, you will get the best performance out of a 102" stainles steel whip antenna (easy to tune too).
