This sounds like the setup I currently have. That hose has been in there at least 4 years. I thought the new part # was newer than that. Maybe the PO found somthing else and made it work. This might be the first time the PO did something helpful. Ben > Date: Sat, 22 Apr 2000 21:39:20 -0400 > From: Michael Baxter (snip) > Here's the skinny on tranny cooler lines. A: The aftermarket torque converter rebuilders can make a different stall speed in the AW4 AFAIK. If I recall, I'll call SeaTac tomorrow and see. You mean the Lexus also has the same stall speed behind the V8? There is a 4L80 (no E) that is non-electronic, but then you'd need an adapter. I don't cre much for the Chryco 800 series trannies, which have a very weak O/D that I see in LOTS of tranny shops being redone. I had one that was an underdrive in my motorhome in the mid '70s behind a 318 so it had 6 speeds forwards. I'm still looking for a stand alone harness for the AW4, since I've decided to take the plunge and make my stroker into a propane engine. Dave Kamp Jim's right- the AW4 is used downstream of the V8 Lexus SUV, it's also used in the Supra Turbo. There are a few minor changes inside the Lexus version; Greg Friedman can get you the Eaddress of the Aussie that's been doing mechanical beefing on his. The problem with bolting an AW4 to V8 power has nothing to do with strength- if you look closely at the torque curves, you'll see that the 4.0 HO is in the same torque category as the 318... at many points in the low end, the 4.0 can generate MORE torque than the 318. Not unusual for big sixes. There are two reasons why they avoided using the AW4 behind the Mopar engines: 1) Stall speed- The AW4's stall converter is fairly high (2100rpm), which doesn't help the fuel milage of a fullsize with V8. Locking torque converter helps, but the WEIGHT of a fullsize vehicle is what determines how much load will be on the transmission. They decided it was a bit too heavy for the TC lock, and Asin-Warner wasn't about to manufacture a whole line of torque converters for this tranny. (bummer, 'cause there's quite a few guys that'd love to alter the stall a tad!). The Mopar 727- family is loaded with opportunities there. The second was economics; Mopar has been using the 727 family since the sixties... and has the 800-series now... GM did the same thing with the Turbo-Hydramatic (once TH400, now 4L80E)... Ford has done the same with the venerable C6- they just keep improving 'em as years go on, and they were made specifically for the motors and weight classes they're installed in, so no sense in pulling the AW4 in and sending their money elsewhere... They can control their own costs. A: I'm talking about an SJ (Elmo) getting the AW4 behind the 4.6L stroker I'm building. The AW4 is bolted up behind Lexus(?) V8s. I just need a 23 spline so I can bolt up my NP208 instead of converting my NP242 to fit. Hmm... Well... the 242 is definately up to the task... Actually, you could use a 4L80E and the NP205... we'll just figoure out how to make a controller that'll shift the tranny... =A0 ;-) DK :-) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JimBlair, Seattle,WA 1983 4.2L Chero 4dr http://homepages.go.com/~carnuck/carnuck.html Now appearing on allexperts.com Pics: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=3D13998&Auth=3Dfalse ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Apr 2000 13:56:53 -0700 (PDT) From: Carnuck-at-webtv.net (James Blair) Subject: fsj: Re: FWD: Hurry, some ebay stuff..... The bottom line is if your rubber lines have a male and female fittings on opposite ends, the part number above will work perfectly. The new # ma= y be slightly longer depending upon which old part # you have on your FSJ. = If you don't have a male-female mix for the fittings, you may need easily obtainable adapters depending upon the fittings on your radiator. The torker is probably too high reving for most FSJs. I don't think the Offenhauser intake is available anymore, and I think it was also a high rever. Most people that have gone to the Edelbrock have increased power, but probably no extraordinary mileage gains. The big gains are probably when a person goes from a poorly tuned stock setup to a properly tuned aftermarket setup. I would guess that a properly tuned stock setup to properly tuned aftermarket setup would not yield much, if anything. Is yours a stock 2 or 4 barrel? - --- Flierjon-at-aol.com wrote: > Can anyone tell me if there are any peculiarities or > difficulties with an > intake manifold change on an 83 wagoneer?
