The cable was mounted to the holley via a home brew bracket, so none of the stock stuff was left. Jim and I actually used bailing wire to set up the new throttle connection. :) It makes for some rough low speed starts... :) I can take a digital picture of what I have so you can laugh. :) But hey, it works, and I'm at half a tank with about 130 or so miles on the clock, (add 6% to that), and some quick math during the drive to work showed over 15mpg... a vast improvement from 11 that I was getting... still not quite there, but without the egr, a paper elmement and so on , I didn't expect the full mileage. How much do you want for the original throttle cable, the bracket and linkages? Also need a new EGR pipe, mine got bent up a bit and we couldn't get it straightened out... I'm wondering if I could use the Aisin/Warner 30LE40 (or whatever it is) with the 258. I suppose it would make more sense to just install the 4.0L with the AW4 at the same time though... Guess the first thing to do is get Superdawg running properly with the stock carb, then get something going in the way of a shop, or concrete or something, find a decent family car and or a commuter, then pull Superdawg off line and do the swap and conversion... maybe next year... Not a high priority. Let me know on the linkage/egr/cable stuff, I'll have a check in today's mail, might even consider paying the priority postage. :) thanx Tom! Hope all is well with you. A: I didn't see my post come back about this? The Chev 4L60 trans (not the 4L60E!) with O/D, is basically a TH400, but more efficient, and using an AMC adapter, and PROBABLY 6 cyl length driveshafts and the 6 cyl trans crossbar mounting holes in the frame (I haven't measured yet) will work. I am going to put the 4 speed AW4 in Blackie this week. jcjones wrote: << IMHO, if you stay with an automatic transmission, you can't get a better one =A0=A0then the TH400. DSandelands wrote: >From years of reading various car mags (not first hand experience), it is my understanding that you are correct, the TH400 is one of the strongest transmissions available whether automatic or manual. However, these same sources indicate that the TH400 is probably the least efficient automatic around. I remember an old Hot Rod test where they stated that the TH400 drained 40 HP from an engine through frictional losses whereas a TH350 used only 25 HP. I can't supply a cite for this, but I think these numbers are generally accepted as correct. Presumably modern automatics and manuals are significantly more efficient. Since CA emissions laws prevent me from doing much to increase engine output, at some point I would like to install a more efficient transmission and get some of that lost HP back. As a bonus a few more mpg would be great too. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JimBlair, Seattle,WA 1983 4.2L Chero 4dr http://homepages.go.com/~carnuck/carnuck.html Now appearing on allexperts.com Pics: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=3D13998&Auth=3Dfalse ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 May 2000 11:54:54 -0500 From: "R.J. Seems like a TH700R4 is the easiest swap. This is an attractive idea that many have considered (including me) but few have tried. I know of one success story and one failure. I don't think either one involved a Q-trac though. One of the main issues is that the front driveshaft tends to hit the case of the 700R4 somewhere near the pan flange. I'm not sure which t-cases can be used with this. I stopped researching this about 6 months ago and can't remember as much as I'd like. > Finally, does anyone know if the Spicer 18 is a direct bolt in for a QT. I.e. > , would the front and rear drive shafts need to be modified? I really want a > manual trans even if I have to change transfer cases to get it. My understanding is that the Spicer 18 is much too weak for a FSJ. It is attractive though because a Saturn overdrive is a bolt-on. A Dana 20 will swap in for a Q-trac, but I think the spline counts are different so a tranny/output shaft swap would be in order. Naturally, you'd need to get the tranny adapter with the t-case so it might be easier to just get the tranny and t-case and swap them both in together. Minimal driveshaft modifications are required, and driveline angles are reported to be acceptable. At 3000 rpm my Dana 20 gets very loud. If you drive at these speeds it would be something to consider.
