I'm going to be swapping the 360 in my Cherokee for another, and thought I'd take care of some other things at the same time. Along those lines, I have a few questions. Here is the list of replacements I'll do at the same time; anything that I'm missing that I should do as well? * Motor mounts * TH400 front seal * Clean and paint engine compartment * Paint replacement engine and all accessory brackets * Wire brush and paint exhaust manifolds; also drill and tap for air tubes, but plug with 9/16-NF bolts, in case AIR-pump has to be retrofitted for emissions purposes. * Replace mangled tranny hard cooler lines. * Power Steering hoses The radiator, hoses, wires, exhaust, starter and alternator are all new, so those can stay. For the engine paint, I'd like to do it in the original AMC blue; Anyone have a paint-code for Dupli-color or other engine paint? I can't find that color in the parts stores around here. With the new engine, and the Rustoleum Red for the body, this truck may actually be half-decent by the end of the summer! ________________________________________________ Bob Barry MailTo:RBarry-at-Providence.Edu http://studentweb.providence.edu/~rbarry/wheels/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 14:15:37 EDT From: DSandelands-at-aol.com Subject: Re: fsj: Re: AC parts anyone? Jeepnut, You may not have to make any mods to your system to switch to R134. I would recommend that you check to see if the compressor clutch is engaging. If your system has a low pressure switch, it will prevent clutch operation if the system is discharged, in which case just pull the connector off the switch and jump it with something like a paper clip. Then pump some leak detector through the system and check for leaks. If no leaks go ahead and recharge with R134. I wouldn't worry about changing the desiccant. Not enough improvement to warrant the cost. It is important to fully charge the compressor with new R134 compatible ester oil. R134 molecules are considerably smaller than R12 molecules and tend to leak past the seals. The new ester oil goes a long way to prevent this (or at least slow it down). I made these changes to an '89 Probe GT (turbo road rocket) which originally had an R12 system. The AC worked though not was well as with R12. However, for comparison purposes, the converted PGT AC was pretty close to the AC in my '00 Cougar. I had to refill the converted PGT system about every 18 months due to R134 leakage. Also, it is worth noting that Pepboys at the time I made this conversion would have recharged the original R12 system for $134. Thus, I don't think the conversion was worth it. In my new (old) '77 Chero I am going to have it recharged with R12. Pepboys (at least the one in Redondo Beach, CA) wants about $150 dollars to recharge the Chero with R12. At this price, I don't think hassling with a conversion is worthwhile. Dave In a message dated 5/25/00 11:00:06 PM Pacific Daylight Time, jeepnut-at-bellsouth.net writes: << How generous. At first thought I could then swap the compressor out and see if it is noisy. Won't matter since my system will be down shortly anyway... If it sounds good then... I wonder if they can pressure test the coil out of the car to see if it holds gas... Surely they can. Then I could try my luck at rebuilding a compressor! The FSM I have does show a pretty fair rebuild how-to for these I think. That could be fun. I kind of get the idea talking to my service guy that if you're replacing the evap coil, then you should get a new expansion valve and dryer/accumulator at the same time. They are too cheap to take a chance at paying for all that labor again to open up the system and replace them later. ... but if I just use your evap coil and compressor... I have to think about a few things, but cheap parts is hard to pass up... Thanks. (I ran my M20 in Elmo for about 150 miles w/o oil because $#^-at-^$^-at- Q-no-lube in Smokey Point didn't put any in when they drained it! I think its the front axle. It doesn't sound like anything is about to imminently fail. But hey, I don't really know. Anyone have an opinion on the likelihood of imminent failure. The question is of some urgency. =A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0I am leaving on a week long road trip to Canyonlands and the surrounding national parks next week. I was out there about four years ago and discovered that many interesting trailheads (for backpacking and hiking) are only accessible by four wheel drive. While I was going to take my '00 Cougar, I am now tempted to take the old Chero. I've always wanted to do some backpacking in the Maze, but I would need to traverse about 70 miles of jeep trail to get to the trailhead. According the Park Service, jeep trails are roads only passable by high clearance four wheel drives. The Maze wasn't in my plans for this trip, but now I am thinking of taking the Chero and tackling it. I would have to go about 1800 -2000 freeway miles and about 70 jeep trail miles. =A0 I've only had this beast four weeks and I know its not ready for long road trips, but still I am tempted to risk it. Any opinions? Does anyone know if Moab has a good 4x4 shop that will not rip me off if I have to get repairs.
