I'm not sure how well they like shifting on the fly. On the digest.net fsj list we've had a thread on finding one for a guy in florida. I posted pictures of my failed np228 from wagoneers.com. The 228 has a center diff unit (like the np242 in the xj) and the 229 a viscous coupler. You shouild never install hubs or remove the front driveshaft on the units because if 4wd is engaged without both axles connected damage may result. Another case that drops right in is the np219 quadratrac unit. Used from 80-82. The 228 was used around 86-88??? The 229 from 83-91. The 229 was also used in the xj but will likely have a different input spline count and a slip yoke rear output, used from 84-86 behind the worst engine ever put in a jeep, the chevy 2.8l v6. :) John Any aluminum case xfr case takes ATF and not gear lube. __john_at_http://wagoneers.com__ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jul 2011 10:50:13 -0700 From: Jim Blair Subject: RE: fsj: Re: np229 The FSJ and XJ (as well as the single speed version NP119/128/129s used in Eagles) NP219, NP228 and NP229 are all fixed yoke and 23 spline, EXCEPT a few 5 speed Eagles with BA-10/5 trans which are 21 spline (and probably only used the NP119) The XJs only used the NP229 and NP228 with the 3 speed auto Mopar trans which came behind the AMC 2.5 and GM 2.8 V-sicks with the Selectrac emblem on the back. The NP208 was used from '80 till '88 (so far none have popped up after the J20s went away) I have one here in Seattle that I'd trade for a good NP228 or NP229 (for the Eagle I'm fixing for my wife) The NP242, NP231 and a few other 23 spline XJ cases (08/90 and newer build date except 3 speed auto as above) will bolt to the 727 or 9XX cases in FSJs, BUT they will be 1" short from the bottom, which may case an issue with endplay inside the case and extra wear on the trans output shaft teeth. To go the other way (AW4 or AX15 23 spline) to NP 208/219/228/229, you need a 1" spacer ring and extended studs from http://partsmike.com to bolt up. You will need to make a trans crossbar change as well (I moved my 6 cyl bar back 1 hole and regrouped the others till I make a new crossbar this fall) I currently have an AW4 and NP208 in my '83 J10 that's going to become a parts truck for my son in Canada. Right now I'm off to haul a '71 Bug to pic'npull for my neighbor. They'll pay him $400 for it because it's a complete runner! > Subject: fsj: Re: np229 > To: FSJ-List-at-yahoogroups.com; fsj-at-digest.net > From: fullsizejeeps-at-gmail.com > Date: Fri, 29 Jul 2011 16:20:38 +0000 > > The np229 and np228 are selectrac units. Got the SG16507 part from the Advance web site, it comes, we're set to go, get the old one off after figuring out the mounting bolts that go through the frame, and got all 4 bolts off. Hmm, new box has only 3. And, what was I thinking? Jim said they all have 4 bolts, why would I think 3 was ok? 3 is not ok. 4 is ok. Box goes back to a store that says, oh, in 1980, they went to a 4 bolt box, number SG17537 (Fenco numbers) and I have to go across town to get one. We matched the casting number to the core(5691676), I get it, bring it home, and the pilot shaft is only about .600, not . 770 like the old one, that won't fit...too loose for the pilot collar. Ah! back to the store, they don't have a replacement collar and that's the only box. and they can have it. I get my money and the core back. There's another one on the north side of town, they'll ship it south and check it out tomorrow. Mark, getting the box out wasn't that bad. The frame bolts were a little tight, but everything is easy to get to. bring a bucket for the PS fluid. Meanwhile, any suggestions on a better source? I will check rockauto. - - Landon 79 J10 ------------------------------ End of fsj-digest V1 #3758 **************************
