Fingers crossed! ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Aug 2011 17:22:44 +0000 From: john Subject: fsj: Wrecked xj owner needs cheap wheels - seattle area My 77 year old retired engineer friend/former co-worker, Stan, who had his xj rear-ended needs another set of wheels, pickup, minivan or maybe another jeep. He wants something he can sleep in as he travels a lot. He drove his xj up to Alaska. He usually goes down to South America over the winter and stays with friends there. So I don't think he'll be using this vehicle a lot, but it needs to be reliable, looks are not important. He has about a grand to spend. Anyone trying to sell a reliable vehicle in the greater Seattle area for about a grand? Take a shortened xj in trade? :) We talked about fixing his Jeep and it was determined that wasn't a good idea on many levels. A 77 year old should not be crawling over a gear shift to get out of the car, and he shouldn't be driving something that is likely going to be a bit squirrely to drive, not to mention the integrity of that vehicle has been greatly compromised, if he gets in another truck's way there's no knowing how many of the xj's lives remain. I usually quit rebuilding an xj after 2 or 3 totals. :) Since he's not into just using that for off-road fun, he needs to stay out of it. :) I'm trying to find a buyer for the parts/engine/trans. It's got a good 4.0 HO/5 spd. 3 good tires too. My son and I figure it's worth about 500 bucks. Anyone interested? Stan has no family in the area as he is from Poland, lives out of town a little ways and has decided that he can't do this without me. So we're dealing with a tight budget, language issues, lack of mechanical repair skills and age issues. Meanwhile my neighbor and my household have decided that it's time to change hot water heaters, especially since the neighbor's tank relieved itself on the carpet. And since that house was built shortly before ours, we figure this is a good time to swap ours as well. So if anyone in the area has experience with hot water tanks I'd appreciate an assist and tech info, and from all a product recommendation, we're having our hardwood floors refinished after Labor Day so this needs to be done soon. It's a 52 gal electric. Should I buy one from Lowes or Home Depot or maybe a plumber supply? Brands to avoid? How does one get the relief valve piping off? Looks like the fitting isn't a swivel and all that copper pipe going into the wall is sweated on. In other news, I actually have two cars in the monster carage, need to shuffle more stuff around and hoping I can con jim blair into coming over for some linux support so he'll help me move some workbenches. :) Another sunny day in Seattle, summer finally showed up. Hope all you east coasters are ok. Keep your feet dry and your heads down! Anyway I can tell you that having Linux installed and working in you laptop can be very easy or very difficult, it depends on de distro and the hardware. I recommend Ubuntu 10.04 LTS or Ubuntu 11.04. OpenSuse is a very good choice too, I used it for about 10 years, since SuSE 6.0 or so. As a end user I believe the best part is that you don't have to worry about viruses, you can surf the web freely without beeing afraid of what is getting into your machine. If you have any concrete questions I can try to help. Regards, Ernesto. Mint has a good feature to search its own forum, so you know what is working or a real headache. You will realize that most devices are a real PITA. I have a netbook samsung np210 and it is almost flawless, cannot adjust the brightness.... but I have a separate monitor.... Of course I am still running wubi..... because I need mapsource.
