The panel runs from the cowl (right behind the front fender) to nearly the back of the Jeep. Because of the simplicity of the design there are a lot of standing edge joints so the actual deconstruction and reassembly are simpler than most. That being said you are removing the entire side of the vehicle and you will likely have to brace the tin that is staying so it is in the correct place when the new panel comes into place. Plasma cutter will just give you lots more practice welding as you will blow through panels that you meant to leave intact. (the DPO on my MG left me many of these holes) Spot welds need to either be drilled or ground and chiseled. MIG welding on thin sheet metal takes some practice as well. Having done a lot of body work over the years if I was just learning how to do body work I would start simple. If this CJ-5 has rusted out sides (I can appreciate saving a special car...I have done it more than once) where else does it have rust? If the front fenders have rust holes cut out the rust and weld in patches. That is a decently easy first sheet metal welding job. Then floors are a great skill builder, you get to drill spot welds, cut metal, prep metal, clamp in the new parts, weld in and seam seal. If you do ugly welds you can hide them. Another option is to find somebody who will work with you. Some restoration mechanics (like me for instance) will work with a customer...I will do the skilled stuff and the customer will do some of the bull work...the customer saves money and I have higher throughput. Another Jeep enthusiast might be willing to help either in exchange for another skill or for money. Body work includes a lot of stupid little tricks and having a feel for just how hard to hit stuff with which hammer and most of these tricks are best learned from a teacher. That being said there is a teacher who didn't exist when I started and that is the youtube. Check out Restodan's channel. He seems to like Chevrolets and he will admit that his work isn't perfect (it really is pretty good), but he says that he has a lot of fun with his cars which from the looks of things he does. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Dec 2011 20:46:19 -0800 (PST) From: john Subject: fsj: talk about precision Parts of Germany have similar climate to Seattle... here when it's dark and cold and damp we make coffee and watch our jeeps mold, in Germany they apparently make models inside... :) check out the precision and use of computers...
