I played around with the weight before I went with the 4.0. I towed my trailer with the equivalent weight, tires/ratio that I had planned for superdawg... it was all within acceptable ranges... the SD33T should be pretty good as well with 3.54s/235s... I guess I need to drop in on curtis again and see what his sad story is this year... in april it'll be what? 12 years? or only 11... can't remember... if he didn't do such good work I think this would be even harder than it is... at this point my white '83 J10 long bed is a very nice truck, it'll take little effort to make it even better... won't be a daily driver, but then again I'm not so sure I'll use superdawg as one either. the jetta wagon with the TDI is really nice. I should probably figure out if I can tow a VW with an automatic and make a tow bar setup so I can pull my little wagon around behind superdawg. :) we've decided to sell the white jetta sedan... super perfect car... but the benz is harder to sell, and overall a much higher quality vehicle... even with 240,000 miles on it it's in extremely good condition... tomorrow's task is to clean out the carport so I can get it all the way in, right now it's kind of an interesting precision parking arrangement getting two cars in my shop with a 9' door... it's doable, but my wife has had to have my son come out with the floor jack to move the car over to one side so she could drive out... I didn't use a jack to park it... don't know what's a matter with these folks... there was at least a half inch clearance on either side... I mean it's not like I'm doing the speed limit when I park these things... I took some pictures of getting the white jetta out when my jetta wagon was in... it was too close for my comfort... It would have been nice to have gotten a bigger door... but this one was a bargain, and it would have cost about 3k new... came with an opener and installed for about $900... it was from a remodel on a high end home... nice insulated wood door with windows on top... :) john - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ vehicle city/hwy engine/trans/xfr - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1987 Mercedes 300D (124) 25/38 mpg 3.0L Turbo Diesel/AT 2002 VW Jetta GLS TDI Wagon 34/45 mpg 1.9L TDI/AT 2002 VW Jetta GLS TDI Sedan 34/45 mpg 1.9L TDI/AT - for sale 1983 Jeep J10 long box (SJ) 11/15 mpg 5.9L AT/NP208 (best mpg 17.68) - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1983 Jeep J10 Stepside (SJ) (Superdawg)- under construction since 1999 getting '80 Scout SD33T Diesel, TF727/NP208 mpg: 20/24 expected - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -o|||||o- http://wagoneers.com/johns-vehicles.html - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- fahrvergnugen y'all - please reply to: john-at-wagoneers.com Snohomish, Washington - where Jeeps and VWs don't rust, they mold http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 TRSTGZS http://JohnMeister.com HTTP://WAGONEERS.COM http://fotomeister.us - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ On Sat, 11 Feb 2012, Landon Tesar wrote: # Thanks, John, that 2400 rpm number for the 97 4.0 is just what I needed. The 4.0 is a really durable engine. It seems that they go 200,000 miles and then lose the rear main seal, but typically still have good compression and good oil pressure. For a driver I will take fuel injection over a carburetor any day of the week. For $500 the worst you could do is have a livable engine that is not some 70's smog motor. Other swaps that might be worth considering would include a 1990's Chrysler Magnum (318 or 360) I really like the 318 in my Dakota and my friend Rob is fixing to put a Magnum 360 in his rock crawler Ramcharger for the the fuel injection. Those motors are also pretty tough. Been sick for the last few weeks so I haven't touched my Wag's floors in a while. Was hoping to feel better today, but I guess that wasn't the plan. In the process, it fused several lighting wires together. I started repairing the mess and decided that it might be better to just rewire the whole truck considering all the other electrical gremlins that are bound to rear their heads. I had a look at the Painless Performance site and they don't list a harness for the Wagoneer.
