I have a 3 inch box drop from my '73 J4000 (also used from the factory for power steering) and if I was to offroad with it I would've needed a cross brace. High crossover steering works much better to cure bump steer though. That's what I put on Black Jack with the 7" lift. A little extra toe-in helps with the wander and making sure the rims are correct offset helps a LOT! I still have the D44 front diff from mine. I saved it because I was going to put it into the Pumpkin (BMax's '68 Travelall) as it looks like a direct bolt in and it already has crossover steering and easier to find 11" drum brakes, but I may be going to the front and rear diffs from the '83 J10 I parted instead and running the 360 with an AX-15/NP208 combo to save fuel. (it's sad when an AMC V8 can get better fuel economy than an IH 6 cyl without even having the overdrive!) That decision is still on the back burner though. WHICH one of my existing Diesels should I part with? the '02 Jetta TDI wagon with 221,000 miles (AT, leather, good condition, 30/40mpg) or the '87 300D with 240,000 miles (AT, leather, excellent condition, 23-30 mpg) in September will also be selling the '97 Suburban LT 1500 with 5.7, very nice condition... and I might part with my '83 J10 long bed, 360/AT... excellent condition... kind of hoping that my '83 J10 Stepside would be finished up soon so I can sell the white J10 without being without a truck... hope springs eternal, even after 11 years... :) so, should we keep the Jetta or the Benz? the Jetta can stand to have some new shocks, brakes, etc. the Benz needs the trip odometer fixed and the cruise... otherwise it's in superb condition. I prefer to drive the Jetta even though it's much slower than the Benz... so I'm leaning towards keeping it... but it's worth more than the benz... both are great cars... not sure what book value is for either, would likely ask $7500 for the wagon, $5500 for the benz, the suburban books at $4300, thinking of asking $3500 for it, the J10 won't leave here unless I get $4500... which is probably more than it's worth in these parts... but then again I kind of like it... ;) The cool thing about the KJ-CRD is that it's the same color as my Jetta wagon... and it was towed behind a motor home by the original owner... the guy I'm going to get it from is the 2nd owner, he got it with 30k, out of that probably half was towed??? Either way at 65k it's got 35k before it needs servicing... that'll take us 2 to 3 years... john ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- john-at- http://wagoneers.com TRSTGZS Snohomish, Washington - where Jeeps and Diesels don't rust, they mold buy direct: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education" Theodore Roosevelt (American 26th US President (1901-09), 1858-1919) - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2012 21:29:17 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: fsj: Diesel update... a twist in the plot... so... it seems the overwhelming wisdom is to keep the 300D and part with the Jetta... that makes a lot of economic sense... but there are many things I like about the jetta, at least in concept... while looking to see if there were any other jeep Diesels out there before making a long term committment with a payment... I stumbled upon an old XJ with the 2.1L Renault... oh yes, I know this engine quite well... right down to it's wet sleeves held in by o-rings, it's bosch injection pump, and it's paris-rhone alt/vacuum pump... but the pictures look good and I'd rather buy it outright and spend something on repairs than have a car payment... besides, if the renault engine turns into a blob of aluminum recycling material I can easily drop an OM617 into the hole, making use of the existing transmission and xfr case... no wiring changes... I'm actually quite excited about this latest find... oh, I've seen the 85-87 xj's with the TD advertised on and off and they are generally sad and pathetic vehicles that people won't lay to rest peacefully because of what they represent... this one looks pretty good to me... and I'm willing to give up the jetta for it... I mean it's not like I need to worry about having a car to get to work... if one dies, I have spares... and a bicycle... and my wife doesn't work so I can use hers... :) anyway... I didn't ask the more important question (that was answered by the list mom of a couple of lists... :) and that is SHOULD I BUY A LIBERTY CRD? The VM motori 2.8L CRD is Italian and isn't perfect, has some cool design features, like rocker arms that break instead of bending valves if your Jeep dealer didn't read the shop manual and thinks it has a timing chain... but otherwise... the KJ is not exactly my favorite Jeep... it's not my least favorite either... but I'll consider pretty much anything with a Jeep badge or a Diesel... having both is a major plus... So, y'all answered my question... keep the Benz... to which my wife just said, told you so... as far as the Liberty... mixed emotions... have driven a few, they drive better than the gas rigs... but... and they are more economical and less expensive than a grand cherokee with a Diesel... dang, if I was only born rich instead of good looking... ;) ----- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -o|||||o- john-at- http://wagoneers.com TRSTGZS Snohomish, Washington - where Jeeps and Diesels don't rust, they mold buy direct: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education" Theodore Roosevelt (American 26th US President (1901-09), 1858-1919) - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Jun 2012 08:05:21 -0700 From: Jim Blair Subject: RE: [FSJ-List] RE: fsj: tim's 71 J-truck First, I would do new springs to bring it up to height or at least take the blocks out. They tend to break, twist loose, wobble, etc. Taking those blocks out would put the steering back into line with the steering arm. The wheels appear to be aftermarket. If the centerline offset is different from stock, it REALLY affects the older rigs big time. Open knuckle ('74 up) have more steering inclination built in. Even a bit of toe-in would help with the wander. The "king pins" need to be tight as well (later open knuckle ones used ball joints) My fix is going to be replacing the front axle with an open knuckle one (which will making turning a tighter circle happen as well) Chev front axle for RH drop (I think '77 was the last year of D44 front) and brakes from a Ford 1/2 ton pre '80 (approx '75 up with disc brakes) with open knuckle and leaf springs would be the best swap for yours to keep the 5 on 5.5" wheels and correct side drop. It depends how far you want to go. If the brakes are okay, then new leaf springs or just remove blocks (which will lower it) and toe-in adjustment after checking nothing is loose/worn is the cheapest way. Another main leaf added to the current pack (with the eyes cut off of whichever one is weaker) and put into #2 position) to lift it "correctly" for now.
