The toughest part of the driving trip south is central america due to political and criminal issues. So if I plan to do this trip.... will try to find a J truck from similar year with a better engine.... I guess the ideal is a Jim's or John's spec truck.... either a 4.0, or a strocker or a diesel would be ideal for improved performances, of course having a diesel on my hands, I may keep it. In my country the gas costs 39 "pesos" per liter, thats about 1.77 US dollars per liter, or 6.7 US dollars per gallon. The diesel costs me 36 pesos per liter, around 6.2 US dollars per gallon, but my 3.3 diesel Perkins engine gives me 10Km/liter, I don't think someone can reach that performance with a gas engine and a 70's or 80's truck. Back to travel... the permanent marker to find your back.... so the word "road" must mean a part of dirt that is most travelled. I remember seeing trucking in Africa.... trucking as in semi to transport goods.... it is probably somewhere on youtube. The level of mud was beyond imagination.
