You've got me in HP, but I've got you in torque... but you're 700 pounds lighter... :) and best I can tell from the internet, in the 10-12 second 0 to 60 range... so it looks like you'll win a stop light challenge. ;) WRENCHING DETAILS - cooling system maintenance... I managed to flush the cooling system on my '83 J10 (360-v8), pulled the radiator, swapped the water pump, tstat (went with a 180F), all the coolant lines, and belts... that radiator was nasty inside, ran water through it for some time both ways until it ran clear, there were no clogged rows, just black iron like stuff... the new, made in the USA water pump seemed to have a little shorter outlet for the heater line... not much to attach to... opening kind of small... the outlet for the lower rad hose or the lower rad hose was different... had to cut the hose down about 3" to fit... still has a little buckle to it... not good... don't get it... of course I ended up breaking off a bolt/stud that held the power steering pump bracket... thankfully it broke off below the nut so I could get the water pump off... didn't bother to attempt to extract it... the ps pump is securely mounted to the block, and I put the broken stud back in so it's resting against the broken part so it will still provide support under tension from the belts. seemed to work ok.... I picked up one of those plastic pin things to mount the trans cooler properly... but the lines would not attach to the cooler, that's how I smacked my finger, ended up creating a fitting with a larger section of hose into some old steel fuel line and stepping it down that way, one of the connections is weeping ATF, so I'll need to replace this mickey mouse setup with a couple of brass nipples or add another hose clamp... or get a tranny cooler that fits the standard rubber tranny cooler lines... I still need to put the grille back on and attach the black letter decals I bought from BJ's to the tailgate... oh yeah, and pull the passenger side vent assembly out, clean that are and reseal it to fix my leak... Michel, any suggestions on getting that assembly out? It's in there pretty tight... black goop of some kind... think it's leaked before... the wiper/vent area didn't have too much stuff in it if I recall correctly... maybe pine needles... anyway... that's next... we've had a prolonged dry spell, actually a late summer, so I need to get it fixed before our weather turns "normal" again. :) there's a classic car show in Snohomish today... might try to get down there... later, john ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -o|||||o- Linux: the choice of a GNU generation http://WAGONEERS.COM Snohomish, WA- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ...shop AMSOIL directly at: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- "A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education" Theodore Roosevelt (26th President (1901-09), 1858-1919) RTB&TRSTGZS - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2012 01:53:43 +0000 From: john@wagoneers.com Subject: Re: fsj: day of wrenching... I've done one of the vent windows as well. The 2nd one I took to a glass shop and paid them to do that and the windshield at the same time. Pix on line. I figured out the vent on the pass side. Used a couple of pry bars to pull it, the PO didn't realize there was supposed to be a drain and sealed it. I pulled enough stuff out of there to start a small garden. :) I tested both sides with the hose, the driver's side has a little bit of restriction, but drains, so I may come up from the bottom and try to clean it that way. The water pump lower rad hose has a slightly different angle and length. My hose is weeping a little. Had just enough metal under the first clamp to add one more. Got both as tight as I could. I should use a driver and ratchet to get it the rest of the way. Put my black jeep letters on the tailgate and swapped the rotor and cap. Next project is to rewire the cab, fix the dome light, glove box and reinstall the stereo. Then when my son has time we'll swap in the 3.31 axles I bought from jim blair. I'm hurting today. Getting too old for contorted wrenching jobs. :). Spent about 9 hours tearing it all apart and putting it back with a break to check out my friend's benz and chase parts. Pix here: http://fotomeister.us/2012/09-Sep-29-J10-waterPump/ I will upload the final shots of the inside of the vent and letters and make an ALL.html page. Also, the car show... http://fotomeister.us/2012/ look for the latest directories. John __john_at_http://wagoneers.com__ - -----Original Message----- From: Michel Balea Date: Sun, 30 Sep 2012 17:43:21 To: john Subject: Re: fsj: day of wrenching... That was a busy schedule. As for the vent window... Pita, you need to pull the window out, so all the hardware has to come off, to disassemble the vent window support and slide it backward. The screws on the slope part of the door, the hidden one under the latch, inside the door panel that seems to be added after 79 probably. The leak is the result of hardened rubber at the base but also metal fatigue and the gap for the window and the vent window progressively gets wider, or a break in the metal will develop.... I pulled one from the junkyard because of a broken latch that jb weld could not fix.... But did not feel like messing w the disassembly... So black duct tape and one of those safety bracket secure the passenger vent window. Indeed it is amazing what is coming out of the cooling system.... I ran the garden hose for a good 10 min after I had clean water, now 200 miles later, the coolant water and water wetter is back to murky color. Thinking of a cooling filter bypass system. For the transmission cooler, I installed a bracket on the valence so there is no need to sacrifice those plastic zip tie when the radiator need to be pulled again. This is the OEM setup on the 85. Otherwise I finalized the direct tailgate switch, hole in tailgate with a running wire to the cigarette lighter and swapping the quick connector to invert polarity, but after 2 years, the connectors were getting too much work out.... Now we have a real momentary switch. $5 for the switch and some connectors with the wires that I had around.
