I have fixed most to the issues on my '83 by cleaning and replacing grouns, and then replacing old wires, cleaning contacts, and making sure all grounds were connected, clean and even adding more ground wires... I'm not as concerned about ground loop issues as I am having a ground in the first place, after all, we're not dealing with anything but DC and lights typically. If you have a fancy stereo or CB and start hearing strange voices or noises, then go back and eliminate the redundant grounds and toss a few pi filters in the mix. BUT, making sure all connectors and grounds are clean and secure is the first step. You could have your alternator tested at any battery shop or FLAPS... but even then you could still have a bad alternator... it just passed the tests they made. My '83 J10 would drain the battery overnight, but pass the tests... turns out the PO had messed up the wiring horribly... and what PO of an FSJ hasn't? :) I bought a new harness... problem was it wasn't a direct replacement... there were a few changes between '79 and '83 and the pins that swapped weren't the same size on the firewall, so I couldn't just switch pins... I had to cut and jumper so to speak... it was a time consuming and challenging ordeal that I would not wish on any one... But replacing the engine wiring, which was NOT a trivial task... I needed the schematic for a '79 and an '83 and if you've seen either, they are not clear and easy to understand especially when you get into the alternator circuits... my goodness what a mess... I've been in electronics since the '60s, have taught it, designed it, troubleshooted it and understand it very well... those diagrams are a mess... and then to translate the schematic to the actual wiring... very challenging... especially when you don't know what your vehicle really should have because of what PO's have done to it... and of course we don't know if the manuals are 100% correct either... Electrical issues in vehicles are the most challenging... if you think your vehicle is stock, then deal with the corrosion issues one wire and one connector at a time... Start at the battery... clean the cables, connectors and maybe just replace them... not expensive and internal corrosion can add resistance to them that can drop voltage and create heat. Take the ground leads off, sand the area where they connect, spray them with brake cleaner or electrical contact cleaner and reattach firmly. Open each connector up and spray contact cleaner in them, connect and reconnect a couple of times to help clean the contacts, but examine the wires coming out of them... are there any signs of heat? corrosion? You may want to repair that line, either find a new harness or replace that wire, routing it carefully away from sharp edges or heat sources. You don't have to be an electrical engineer, TV repairman, or circuit designer to fix these things... carefully cleaning contacts and making sure wires are not damaged by heat or corrosion is just a visual exercise. Clean contacts are happy contacts, happy contacts pass electrons so they can do their job. :) john ----- - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -o|||||o- Linux: the choice of a GNU generation http://WAGONEERS.COM Snohomish, WA- where Jeeps don't rust, they mold ...shop AMSOIL directly at: http://AMSOIL.com/redirect.cgi?zo=283461 - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- "A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education" Theodore Roosevelt (26th President (1901-09), 1858-1919) RTB&TRSTGZS - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- On Fri, 2 Nov 2012, FSJ-List@yahoogroups.com wrote: # Yahoo!
