If I hit it right after the light goes out, smoke. If I wait till I hear the relay thump, no smoke. Thanx to the benzer who mentioned the three cycle idea! (fergot yer name, but that's ok, I've forgotten mine, and I never did any of that stuff that was around in the 60's/70's either... naturally spacey.. :) later, john --------------------------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john/ Snohomish, Washington USA - where jeeps don't rust, they mold... - ------------------------------------------------------------------ jesus - don't leave life without him... - ----------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Aug 1998 01:32:41 -0700 From: Jon Filina Subject: Re: MPG John was saying: > I'm getting about 25mpg (actually 24.85mpg) in local driving, hilly country, > back roads, some freeway (congested), stop and go, etc. even with the 85 plus > test... Is the 85 plus test what I think it is? You 5 cylinder drivers sure do like making we four-bangers feel bad! ;-) Actually "Tillie" would go that fast if I let her, but these Texas cops have a different idea on the subject of speed.... If I stay around 60-65 on the freeway, without the A/C, my mileage is around 36...35.5 to 36.8. I am curious what other 240d owners are getting. My previous diesel, a VW Jetta, was getting 42-44. With the MB weighing about 1000 lbs. more, I am very happy with my mileage. > BTW, my oil consumption has stopped since the valve cover has been replaced. > I've gone over 500 miles at least, maybe 1,000 since the work and I'm still > at the full level. I'm encouraged. I've been averaging about 1 qt per 1000-1200 miles. My VW's were using a qt. every 2500-3000 miles. I was concerned about the MB's consumption until I read that 600 miles per quart is considered normal by Daimler-Benz. With your comment, though, I'll be out under the hood tomorrow checking out my valve cover. > Now all I have to do is find that light bulb and either fix or junk the > radio... :) I wish that's all I had to do on mine. On the other hand, working on "Tillie" has been much more enjoyable that my 2 VW's. After the under dash work I will be doing tomorrow, I may retract my last statement... Jon '81 240D "Tillie" 206,000 mi. and a joy to drive! ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #11 ********************************
