I pulled the radio out again... what a rat's nest. Seems someone bypassed the factory wiring for some reason and placed a fuse in the ground path??? They had red wires going to ground, black wires going nowhere and tan wires going to ground... The Haynes manual was marginally helpful in that it helped me figure out that the blue/red stripe wire was related to LIGHTING. Also turns out that when they bypassed the factory wiring they grounded the lighting on the radio... :) I yarded out two stray wires, reconnected the factory wire and apparently hooked up a "memory" wire that's actually hot. At this point it looks like I may have it fixed. I'll see tomorrow whether or not I'm successful. If my ear drums aren't perforated upon turning the key, and it remembers the stations I programmed, then it's fixed! I sure hope so, because I'll have to live with it otherwise with the serious need for new tires and wheels coming to the forefront... HOWEVER, I still need some help figuring out how to program the clock!!!! I figured out how to program stations... press the asterik, punch in the station number, then press and hold a number for a LONG time. The clock isn't playing fair... I've got some numbers punched in that show up when I press the T, but there is still another number in there that I can't change... He only got about 24 mpg on the trip back from Portland... I suppose if I'd done the speed limit like I did on the last trip I would have gotten closer to the 27mpg I got last time... :) Anybody figured out what the optimum cruising speed for mileage for a 300D is? I'm very happy with the Autobahn, er Interstate performance. Once you get this thing rolling it does quite well. My other Diesels (5.7L, 6.2L and 2.1L TD) had to work to make it up some of the hills on I-5 between Seattle and Portland, but Fritz isn't fazed by them... Of course if I just rely on the "cruise-assist" I'd slow down a bunch... this is a really wimpy system... however, it does help take some of the work out of keeping the speed up... :) later, john --------------------------------------------------------------- jesus - don't leave life without him... - ----------------------------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john/ Snohomish, Washington USA - where jeeps don't rust, they mold... - ------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Aug 1998 22:15:42 -0700 From: john Subject: Re: Fritz tire status Fritz runs 5 on 112mm rims... I can't speak for the 300D, but Tillie, my 240D, is happiest between 60 and 65. Without the A/C running, I get 34-36 mpg if I stay within this range. If I average over 65, it drops to about 33. The A/C reduces this about 1-2 mpg. I was surprised, though, to find that using the cruise control reduced my mileage. About a third of my daily drive is over a series of small hills and bends. That little German guy in the cruise control goes crazy trying, and succeeding, to maintain the set speed. When I hit resume, after shifting into 4th, he accelerates the car MUCH faster than I can on my own. He must have a buddy in the injection pump.... Using the cruise control has reduced my mileage to a little over 33 vs. the 35-36 without it. In 1980, I was driving a Subaru GL-5. That '80 Subaru was the neatest car I've owned, except for my 240D. It's a good thing it didn't have a diesel engine, or I may never have found Mathilde. Back to the story... I was on the way home from D/FW airport one night about 3 AM, with the cruise control set for 60 or so in 5th gear. When I got to the mixmaster in Fort Worth, I disengaged the cc and downshifted into 4th. On the south end of town I resumed the cc. The car took off like a rocket! I quickly realized that I was still in 4th gear, so I tapped the brake...nothing....I'm still accelerating... During the next 5 or 6 miles, I kept hitting the brake and gas pedal with no results. I just kept going faster. I reached under the dash and started trying to pull wires out...no luck. I even considered turning the engine off, but was afraid I'd do some serious damage. As I was coming up on my exit...and trying to tear out the wires from the cc...I noticed that the speedometer needle was pegged and the tach was approaching red line! Two quick punches of the gas pedal finally disengaged the cc and I regained control....just before I would have lost control of my bodily functions... ;-O Since then I have always checked the gear shift lever before resuming the cruise control...just in case. Original Becker Europa radio. Intermittent wipers. New (less than 5k miles) Michelin tires. New (professionally rebuilt) driveshaft ($450) and u-joints, carrier bearing. New glow plugs; one burned out and I replaced them all. Power windows work flawlessly. NO sunroof (no leaks!). Original owner's manual. Absolutely NO rust. Paint is good to very good -- some flaws exist, but they're minor. I've only owned it four months. I have no documentation other than the owner's manual, which appears to belong to the car, and indicates that the first service work at 3k miles was performed in Visalia, Calif., so I assume it lived in California for part of its life.
