They are the worst tires I've ever owned. The previous owner had just bought them and already one of them has a broken belt, one flat (it was punctured by a small roller bearing, like from a u-joint.) On wet roads they are frightening. At 30mph if I hit the brakes with medium force they will lock up immediately. On wet roads they first understeer and then "snap" into over steer. On high speed gentle curves they are on the verge of coming loose a good 15 mph under the dry speed. They seem ok on dry roads, they do squeal a bit. But on damp or wet roads they are about the worst tire I've ever seen. I tend to drive aggressively so it may be the fact that I'm pushing things to the limit most of the time. FWIW, even consumer reports rated them the worst for wet roads, not that you can trust consumer reports for much in the way of valid testing, accuracy or the scientific method. :) My plan is to either drive very cautiously on wet roads or replace them with the Michelin MXV4s. :) Or, dollars not permitting, the Arizonian Silver Editions at Discount Tire. :) john At 03:12 AM 11/1/98 PDT, Daniel A Jacobs wrote: >I have some Cooper Lifeliners on my 123, and they work great, and they >have very good wet traction > >___________________________________________________________________ >You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. >Get completely free e-mail from Juno at http://www.juno.com/getjuno.html >or call Juno at (800) 654-JUNO [654-5866] > > - ---------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com Jesus - don't leave life without him... http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john - --------------------------------------------------- Mercedes Benz Diesels, FullSizeJeeps and xj's... found on http://www.digest.net and http://www.wagoneers.com - ---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Nov 1998 21:00:18 PDT From: kc7nol-at-juno.com (Daniel A Jacobs) Subject: Re: 300D My guess is that since John lives in Seattle, he's getting algae in his fuel filter, and may even need to have the fuel screen in the tank cleaned and the tank pressure washed out to get it good and clean. I use a product called "Howes Lubricator Diesel Treat". It is very economical, and a case of this stuff could last as much as two and a half years in a car that is driven 15k miles/year. It does a very good job of keeping the algae from growing. It will also help to reduce smoking if you have a "smoke screen equipped" vehicle like mine used to be! (Consumer Reports magazine, November 1998, page 57) I guess we shouldn't ake CR too seriously, though. Especially since they tested the tires on a Mercury Mystique. ;) My Cooper lifeliners are great, I drive at the traction limit alot, and I especially enjoy (insert sly wicked grin here) showing some of the local teenage brats in their hondas and acuras (note the lack of capital letters for those names) that it takes more than an accellerator pedal to drive fast. I love the fact that my old car worth $2000 driven properly can lose newer cars with inexperienced drivers on twisty roads. I just hope I never have to drag race any of them ;) I guess you may have gotten a bad batch of tires, but I do agree with you about their puncture resistance, of which there is very little. I had a 10 penny nail in the shoulder of the tire, and it was deemed destroyed by three different tire shops. (besides, I use AMSOIL Cetane Boost and Diesel Fuel Concentrate, algae doesn't grow in a clean system... :) Here's what it turns out to be: The vacuum system. Remember I had some work done on the lock system? Well ever since then it hasn't shut off properly. I knew that I needed to replace some parts in the lock system. Well, I've replaced all but one part and the problem still exists, but get this. If I lock all the doors, which work now, then when I restart Fritz he has full power! If I shut Fritz off and not lock the doors and only leave him off for a few minutes, I have power loss!!! :) I verified this Sunday. We stopped for a few minutes and started up the drive, no power, barely made it up our drive... So I stopped up at the highway, got out, locked the doors (my family thought I was losing it), unlocked, got back in, started him up and took off with full power. :) (I couldn't lock from the inside because I hadn't replaced the lock doohicky yet.) So the remaining piece to replace is the master lock switch on the driver's door, according to the shop... Either that or just all the vacuum lines... john ======================================================= john meister sr CAD sys admin, Intermec meister-at-intermec.com (425) 356.1663 http://www.intermec.com ( http://www.wagoneers.com/ john-at-wagoneers.com ) ======================================================= - -----Original Message----- From: kc7nol-at-juno.com [mailto:kc7nol-at-juno.com] Sent: Sunday, November 01, 1998 8:00 PM To: john-at-virtual-cafe.com Cc: jarhines-at-fnfi.com; diesel-benz-at-digest.net Subject: Re: 300D My guess is that since John lives in Seattle, he's getting algae in his fuel filter, and may even need to have the fuel screen in the tank cleaned and the tank pressure washed out to get it good and clean.
