I think I need to invest in a vacuum tester. Fritz is still acting up, won't shut off. Here's a really funny symptom: If I drive him for a while. Stop, get out and do something with the engine turned off, doors unlocked, and then restart and try to go, he has no power, won't downshift... totally gutless... What I found is that if I stop him and shut him off, then lock the doors, unlock the doors and restart, he's back 100%... :) The locks work most of the time after replacing the drivers door switch, and trunk element... later, john - ---------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com Jesus - don't leave life without him... http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john - --------------------------------------------------- Mercedes Benz Diesels, FullSizeJeeps and xj's... found on http://www.digest.net and http://www.wagoneers.com - ---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Nov 1998 22:16:27 -0800 From: john Subject: Fog Tail Lamp On the left side taillights of the 300D their is a bulb, 21W, that in Europe is used as a tail fog lamp. When you pull the fog light switch two notches the tail fog lamp is supposed to come on... This is what the manual is hinting at with the "option" setting. The problem I have is that it's on all the time, whenever the parking lights are on... I'm wondering if someone didn't hard wire that socket or something... Anybody else ever stick a bulb in that socket? It'd be the first red section from the license plate, right next to the brake light... john - ---------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com Jesus - don't leave life without him... http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john - --------------------------------------------------- Mercedes Benz Diesels, FullSizeJeeps and xj's... found on http://www.digest.net and http://www.wagoneers.com - ---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 Nov 1998 10:40:37 -0800 From: "Meister, John" Subject: vacuum challenges Vacuum can be a problem no matter what kind of rig you have. Case in point: xj (little wagoneer) - wouldn't shift in or out of 4wd properly, after hitting the tree last year and rebuilding it found a split vacuum line going to the vacuum cannister. (I'm not sure I want to make the run to Reider Pit on the 21st.... that will be the first anniversary of my totalling the little wagoneer, of course, that tree isn't along side the road any more either... :) SJ (Old Blue) - wouldn't idle or run right - replaced all the vacuum lines under the hood and it helped everything, including mileage... (thankfully AMC figured out that using Vacuum for the transmission stuff is a bad idea when they went with the Torqueflites in 80.) 300D (Fritz) - found that my shifting problem into 3rd gear went away when I replaced some vacuum lines, however, using 5/16" from the Jeep dealer didn't work, it collapsed on tight bends, replaced it this morning with some heavier line from the Benz dealer... working better, still having problems with the engine shutoff and heater... Need to buy a vacuum tester... FWIW, my home system is under construction and it appears my isp is in the same condition as I'm not able to get to my mail easily on the cafe, so if you emailed me and haven't heard back it'll eventually happen... :) Hey Paul, you're not "running" 33x12.50's on your XJ anymore either. Do you notice any correlation between tire size and transfer case/transmission failure? :-) Hey, I still have that NP231, do you have any NP242's you'd like to swap? :-) john ======================================================= john meister sr CAD sys admin, Intermec meister-at-intermec.com (425) 356.1663 http://www.intermec.com ( http://www.wagoneers.com/ john-at-wagoneers.com ) ======================================================= ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #42 ********************************
