They didn't have the 50 year Jeep history though... :( john - ---------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com Jesus - don't leave life without him... http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john - --------------------------------------------------- Mercedes Benz Diesels, FullSizeJeeps and xj's... found on http://www.digest.net and http://www.wagoneers.com - ---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 16 Nov 1998 23:06:22 -0800 From: john Subject: Re: Information on non-automatic 300Diesel availability in U.S. As far as I know only the 240D's came with the manual transmissions. The AT's in the benz seem to be pretty solid. These vehicles are well engineered and make use of spaces and places unlike iron out of detroit... I've crawled around under my 75 240D and my 81 300D and just lay their in awe of how well they did things... :) However, the 240 tranny would probably bolt right up to the 300D... Even the motor mounts might not be that much of a challenge. You'd have to get a good look at both models to know for sure. Shop manuals don't usually answer questions like this. :) (even the jeep manuals don't, go figure... :) If I were gonna do something like this I'd get myself a nice 300D or Turbo Diesel and try to install a 240D tranny. The best thing to do would be buy a wrecked 240D so you had all the linkages, brackets and mounts.... (actually I'd probably look for a nice 240d and drop a 300D with the AUTOMATIC in it. :) good luck... btw, I'm originally from Crystal Lake. Don't miss the rust, cold, hot humid summers or the flatness... I was there last March/April and on clear days kept looking for the mountains... :) later, john At 06:11 PM 11/16/98 -0600, Kokkinias, Jim wrote: > Hello - you must have the Mercedes Benz knowledge to help me; > I am a 40-year-old male, Chicago-area resident, married, with 2 >small boys, and on a tight budget.
