I'm still troubleshooting the system and want to try unplugging those lines. Fritz missed the trip to Portland because I wanted a heater that was easily controlled and a cruise control that didn't have a mind of it's own. For that I paid by getting 16.2 mpg with the little wagoneer... Maybe I should put the 300D motor in my Jeep... :) It would fit... Both rigs weigh about the same... scary thoughts... There has been some discussion on the FSJ (full Size jeep) list about using the 300D in a Wagoneer... Got email from a guy in Texas with a J truck verifying prices on a 300 Turbo Diesel... He might just do it... I still think the GM 6.5L TD would be the ticket in a rig as heavy as the FSJ. However a 300TD or 300D would work nicely in an XJ. I may be putting Fritz up for sale if I ever hear back from the guy back east that has a nice XJ TD for sale... Dropping a 240D motor in that one would really be a smooth move... Although it's got a fresh Renault 2.1 TD in it right now... The little wagoneer has over 187,000 miles but the 4.0L keeps on going... and I have a spare one... But a 300D would be pretty slick in an XJ. later, john - ---------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com Jesus - don't leave life without him... http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john - --------------------------------------------------- Mercedes Benz Diesels, FullSizeJeeps and xj's... found on http://www.digest.net and http://www.wagoneers.com - ---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 22:39:51 -0800 From: john Subject: Re: 240D rebuild kits The only place I can think of is the Mercedes Dealer. NAPA maybe... As popular as these vehicles are I'm sure there are kits out there from aftermarket sources. The only way to get more horsepower out of a 240D would possibly be to turbo charge it, or replace it with a 300D. The thing that helps Diesels the most is AIR. That's why a turbo is so effective. Opening up the exhaust might help some, have never really modified that part of a Diesel. I have increased performance on an American 5.7L Diesel by modifying the air intake, 0 to 60 times went from 26 seconds down to 19. I used an AMSOIL Air filter and added air inlets to the air cleaner housing. In experimenting around with VW and Renault Turbo Diesels I couldn't do anything to increase performance like that. :) The Europeans tend to optimize their systems, where the Americans tried to throttle their's back because it wasn't very strong... :) You could also use AMSOIL Synthethic engine oil, but any real performance gains would be almost imperceptible... THe other thing you might be able to do is lighten the vehicle... Otherwise, enjoy it. You get better mileage with your 240D than I do with my 300D. If you want performance either get a bigger Diesel, a turbo or stuff a 4.0L Jeep MPI engine under the hood. I guarantee it'll add new life to your 240D... Have you ever seen tire smoke in your rear view mirror? :) later, john At 11:57 PM 11/17/98 -0500, Neil Thomas Kirby wrote: >hello >i am wondering if you know of any diesel rebuild kits for the 240d >if so where can i get this at >and do you know of anyway i could get more horse power out of the 240d >diesel engine and > >Please reply to travis_kirby-at-hotmail.com > >Thanks, >Travis > > - ---------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com Jesus - don't leave life without him... http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john - --------------------------------------------------- Mercedes Benz Diesels, FullSizeJeeps and xj's... found on http://www.digest.net and http://www.wagoneers.com - ---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 23:18:19 -0800 From: john Subject: Pacific Northwesters? heaters and studs... I just looked at the list of subscribers and noticed an address that might be from the University of Washington... How many Diesel Benz owners on the list up here in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and BC? Do your rigs have block heaters? Fritz came up from California and doesn't have one. I talked to GP Automotive in Everett and Mike described the process to install... I'm looking at buying one of those in the heater line, JC Whitney has them on sale for around $25. Trying to decide how many watts I should get. It was 38 degrees in the carport this morning... my son was surprised how easily Fritz started up. Hey, my mother in law sent a birthday card and mentioned that there was over 12 inches of snow already in South Dakota!!! Man, we miss all the fun. I may end up driving Fritz in the snow as my wife has comandeered my Jeep as hers... :) I'm looking at some "used" studs for about $250, the guy claims 150 miles on 'em... john - ---------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com Jesus - don't leave life without him... http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john - --------------------------------------------------- Mercedes Benz Diesels, FullSizeJeeps and xj's... found on http://www.digest.net and http://www.wagoneers.com - ---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Nov 1998 23:21:45 -0800 From: john Subject: web pages I've got space on my server, was wondering if anyone wanted a place to put pictures of their Diesel Benz? I'll be putting more FSJ and XJ's up there when I get time. Figured I might as well ask. We could make a useful site for Diesel Benz fans... Anyone want to put together any pages on "how to's"? This list is a bit different than the other two I've started. The other two have a lot of in depth technical issues going on involving repairs, modifications and so on. Our Mercedes are so reliable we don't usually need to repair and modifying them is pretty pointles... :) However, I'm still trying to find time to fix the silly heater panel light and finish fixing the vacuum problem. Other than that Fritz is superb. later, john - ---------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com Jesus - don't leave life without him... http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john - --------------------------------------------------- Mercedes Benz Diesels, FullSizeJeeps and xj's... found on http://www.digest.net and http://www.wagoneers.com - ---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Nov 1998 21:58:59 -0800 From: john Subject: guess what I found? I found a 1981 J10, stepside, 258, AT, NP219... 2nd owner, 150K miles, rebuilt engine... 14 to 15 mpg... dual tanks... I'm pumped, gonna look at it on Sunday, may not sleep between now and then... (it's not a local rig... :( have to travel to see it... may have to work Saturday to reinstall my backup server, it failed again... :( Anybody want to buy a very nice 81 300D? I only have one little vacuum leak to fix, possibly rear passenger door and it's perfect... just bought 4 new studded snows for it, two complete sets of rims and everything... :) the radio works, the cruise works, all the windows work, the glass is perfect... it's only got 130,000 miles on it. I'm the third owner. I even paid to have the sunroof adjusted and lubed. :) The j10 has no a/c, but a rear slider. canopy available for it. it's faded red... Interior worn... all verbal at this point, but it's got to be better than my current J10... :) The guy just bought a 99 ford and really doesn't want to get rid of the J10, but he's got to have the money. He's had it since 84, it had 40,000 miles on it when he got it. Seriously, Fritz is doing quite well. Other than one little vacuum problem I have all the bugs worked out and he's doing superbly. Hate to get rid of him, but can't afford two jeeps and a benz and I really, really want a step side J10. With the kids almost out of the nest the little wagoneer will work fine as the family hauler. Shoot half the time my daughter drives her own car anyways, and my son stays home, and he'll soon be riding his kawaski, he turns 16 in March!!! So it's just becky and me anyways. (there are some benefits to getting old, eh? :) The only bummer about parting with Fritz is the fuel economy. Depending on the gear ratio on the J10 I may make a serious effort at putting a 300D or the turbo Diesel in it. It's a tough call, but I know how hard it is to find the right rig at the right time... 115 inch wheelbase... not quite as good as an FSJ or an XJ, but tolerable... :) Wasn't someone just looking for a good 300D? I'm not even sure what the 300D is worth. I saw one in the STAR last month for $7,500, don't know if that was realistic or not. The only other "flaw" Fritz has is that he is a repaint. It's a nicely done job, but where it's chipped you can see the original goldish color. Not a big deal, but does affect his value slightly. While I love the Benz, I'd rather be in an FSJ. Especially one that doesn't leak oil... Stay tuned to this channel for the continuing flip flops: benz, FSJ, benz, FSJ, xj, Benz, FSJ, xj, Benz... :) (wouldn't it be cool if my wife allowed me to have all the rigs I wanted? :) Wouldn't it be even cooler if I actually had a place to park them all? I mean, I mean, her garden keeps growing into my parking places... :) (sorry I went so long... I'm a little bit wound up right now... :) later, john - ---------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com Jesus - don't leave life without him... http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john - --------------------------------------------------- Mercedes Benz Diesels, FullSizeJeeps and xj's... found on http://www.digest.net and http://www.wagoneers.com - ---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #44 ********************************
