The transmission has to be lowered and the flex plate removed in order to get the plug out of the back of the engine. For that reason I'm still considering one of those tank style heaters to add into the heater line. They "perculate" the coolant and it moves through the system. JC Whitney has them on sale for less than $30 and sells the MBz adapters for another $3 or so. I've used a similar tank style heater on my Mustang when I moved out to Klamath Falls, Oregon in 77. Worked fine there and later in Mitchell, South Dakota. (I saw it so cold there that my heater fan froze!!!!) Granted, SD is further north than Kansas, but depending on where you're at in Kansas it can get very cold. You'll also want to seriously consider Synthethic oil and a good Diesel Fuel additive. AMSOIL is my recommendation, of course... :) Whereabouts in Kansas? john - ---------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com Jesus - don't leave life without him... http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john - --------------------------------------------------- Mercedes Benz Diesels, FullSizeJeeps and xj's... found on http://www.digest.net and http://www.wagoneers.com - ---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Nov 1998 20:36:07 -0800 From: Majordomo-at-digest.net (by way of john ) Subject: list stats - Nov 28, 1998 FYI - here's the totals on the list as of Nov 28, 1998 Members of list 'xj': 51 subscribers Members of list 'xj-digest': 49 subscribers Members of list 'fsj': 46 subscribers Members of list 'fsj-digest': 39 subscribers Members of list 'diesel-benz': 23 subscribers Members of list 'diesel-benz-digest': 12 subscribers john ------------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com - http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... ------------------------------------------------- http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john/MBZ-DSL/diesel-benz-list.html (81 300D) http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john/JEEP/FSJ-list.html (81 J10) http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john/JEEP/XJ-list.html (88 xj wagoneer) ------------------------------------------------- jesus, don't leave life without him... ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Nov 1998 00:28:34 -0800 From: john Subject: copy of Diesel article Did anyone get the STAR May/June 98 issue? Thanks for the tips; you have us reviewing our winter clothing holdings now. Has anyone used a dipstick heater - if so what were the results? I'm told keeping my x-country skis waxed is a good alternative to the 240D... Better to get a magnetic clampon that heats up the oil pan. THe fact that the warmed oil will rise and the oil pan between the two will prevent oxidation of your oil. I also recommend using AMSOIL Diesel Oil, the straight 30W is good to something like -40. I'll double check the specs if you'd like. Also the Diesel Fuel Modifier will prevent gelling, not sure of the temp either. THey have winterized Diesel out there. It might be worth your while to have the real block heater installed. All the other options are gadgets. Spend the money and do it right. :) Leavenworth, eh? So they call it a staff college now. PC is still alive, eh? :) (political correctness). It's interesting that they even let you bring your family now too. THings have changed since I was in... :) john At 09:09 AM 11/29/98 -0500, Paul A.
