I don't trust some of these shops to put the right parts in. When I call up and the gal says $39.95 for a weatherseal my mind runs to the idea they are talking one that comes out of a tube... :) I know of two shops that will install my parts for $100, which is also my comp deductible. I'll be waiting a week for the glass from the Mercedes Dealer, but I want to keep Fritz in first rate condition. He's only got 132,000 miles, is 18 years old and other than having been repainted and having a "gouge" on the right side from the previous owner's woodpile, perfect... :) I can't find the receipt for the starter I just bought from the dealer, jobber price with $40 core came to around $300 or so. IMPCO sells it for $211.53, with a $60.00 core charge! IT's a Bosch rebuilt, but so is the part from the Dealer. The only other factor is shipping charges. IMPCO sells the Hella 7" replacement H4 headlight assembly for $51.95, the local 4x4 shop (Central 4wd - Airport Rd in Everett) lists them for $44.50, special offer to xj list members of $36.34. I'm trying to see what kind of deal I can get on IPF headlamps, the literarture I have from the article I just did on my Jeep shows them at $51 each, but w/o bulbs. The quality of the IPF lamps is significantly better than the Hellas. There is another brand called Candlepower, made in Italy that Central 4wd sells, they are a Bosch design made in Italy, list on those is $34.95, xj list deal $24.99. The quality isn't there though. Anyone else try IPF lights? They are distributed by ARB in Seattle. I just did a test on some of their lights on my XJ wagoneer. The fog/driving combination light was ok, the replacement headlamps are fantastic. BTW, anyone have any used European style lights for a 123 available? There is an ad in the Star magazine that lists them as $229 EACH!!!! yikes. I will be getting a set of the Eurpean light covers from a friend that just sold his 300CD. I'm also buying his shop manuals. That'll give me a duplicate set of some manuals. I'll post which ones I don't need, and may sell the covers if I can't find a used set... I think that my headlights were bothering the guy in the truck and he chucked the rock that busted my windshield last night... just a hunch. Gotta get some decent headlamps in Fritz. I used a regular incadescent type headlamp from a 69 Wagoneer on one side... I NEED a new headlight... :) (I usually use odd ball parts on my Full Size Jeeps! I had a mercedes electric fan on my 67. Never thought I'd consider putting parts from a salvaged wagoneer on my benz! :) BTW, I do resell auto parts and AMSOIL, I'm not really setup for quick turnaround, but if you're looking at original Benz parts I may be able to save you some money if you're willing to wait. The AMSOIL catalog is on my website and you can call them directly using customer #283461 and they'll ship it directly to your house. I also resell 4x4 and Jeep parts. I'm not in this to make money, so I'm not compelled to work at getting parts out faster. Just trying to make a little and save my friends money on parts they can wait for. :) I'll get some pricing from ARB on IPF lights next week if I have time. I'll be covering all the engineering workstations next week as my Sun admin flew home to Canada for Christmas with her family... Have a great holiday! It's snowing pretty good here in Snohomish, WA. later, john ============================================================= The just shall live by Faith... Der Gerechte wird aus Glauben leben... If I'm being an idiot, just ignore this message. Sorry. I'm Alec, and depending on which software I'm using to check my mail, you may see me as DieselFan. I live in the Austin, Texas area, and my wife and I are on our third Benz. Our first was a wonderful 63 (possibly made in 61) 190c fin-tail sedan, running with only about two-thirds of its small motor's recommended compression! We picked it up for under $2000 just before we got married, and we adored that car. We later had a 1980 240D which we affectionately referred to as Cream Puff, and now we're on a 1985 300DT with a Glorious motor. I've been rather neglectful of late (a nicer way of saying I've been too cheap with this car) on the 300, and it needs a few things, So a lot of my input will relate to inexpensive repair questions. My wife has not let me regularly have the 97 Z3 1.9 we bought used over 6 months ago, but it's probably just as well. That car is definitely enough fun that I might get myself in trouble in it. Sorry. Done rambling now. Thanks for having me along. I'm john, I've got an 81 300D, I'm up in the Pacific Northwest, Snohomish, Washington. This is my fourth Benz, 3 of the previous were Diesels. I'm also into SJ & XJ Jeeps. After moving the FSJ and XJ lists to digest.net I started the Diesel-Benz list. Richard is the server owner and graciously provides us the service and space for the archives.
