Apologies that I can't remember your name, but to the user who asked me about my New York local parts guy (most of my year is spent in Iowa, however), I use Estate Motors in Goldens Bridge, NY. Get to it via I-684 (north of me), at the State Police exit (I think it's 8). Showroom guys are a bit uppity but parts staff (Carl, Jim) are top notch fellas. :) hope it helps. _____________________________ Matthew J. Second, EXCELLENT topic. Third, I've had 4 Mercedes, 3 Diesel, 1 gas. The gas rig didn't hold up as well, was exceedingly thirsty and costly to repair. Didn't have as much resale and isn't running right now because the owner broke the exhaust manifolds on the 4.5L V8 gas engine, $650 a side to replace!!! The Mercedes Diesels are not that noisy, especially in the cabin. I've had many Diesels, American and European. The Mercedes Diesels are the finest, easiest to find parts for and very easy to work on. As far as fuel, most Texaco, Shells and so on have Diesel, even in the new stores with the fast food outlets. I've also got a commercial card lock that I've used to fuel up with those truckers up and down the west coast. Never, ever in over 15 years of driving a Dieselmobile have I had problems finding fuel. When I was filmed by a promotional video group by Jeep this summer I tried to get the Diesel message to Chrysler that we want the Big Jeep (SJ's - the Grand Wagoneers) brought back with Diesels. :) It didn't make it into the video they showed at the Jeep Camp though... :) The latest issue of STAR (MB club of America Magazine) talks about a cabby back east using the E300 Turbo Diesel and loving it. IT's a beautiful car, wish I could afford a new benz, because it'd be a toss up between that and the ML series... I hope they do make the ML270TD available stateside. When I got Fritz (81 300D) and he had no block heater I was kind of concerned. Every other Diesel I've ever owned has had a block heater. I checked with a local shop and it's quite involved to install a block heater. (You have to drop the tranny!) Anyways, I've been considering an aftermarket heater spliced into the heater lines and so on.... Well, someone left the freezer door open in Seattle... It's been down in the teens out here in Snohomish... and Fritz has fired off everytime!!!! I'm impressed. Now, if I can just get the heater and vacuum systems to work properly everything will be quite nice... ...btw, Fritz goes in for a new windshield tomorrow morning... :) And he'll be getting some IPF replacement headlights next week... john ======================================================= john.meister-at-intermec.com sr CAD sys admin (425) 356.1663 http://www.intermec.com ( http://www.wagoneers.com/ john-at-wagoneers.com ) ======================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Dec 1998 15:35:34 -0500 From: Chris Klass Subject: Re: Interior Parts Anyone got a number fort them? We're on our third MB, second diesel. I've also enjoyed some time in my in-laws three gas models, including a 75 450SL, an 86 300E, and an 86 420SEL. I definitely agree with John concerning the noise issue. Do NOT think about all the diesel pickups out there (except to thank them for making more gas stations offer diesel fuel). Those sound like 18-wheelers, although they pull like them, too. Especially from inside the cabin, the noise level in an MB diesel is more than acceptable. You may have trouble hearing that you're behind a diesel motor, especially if you have the radio playing at all. As to engine maintenance, it's mostly a simple matter of becoming religious about regular oil changes, plus whatever is recommended. Remember that, in general, it takes a lot fewer parts to run a diesel. Again, I have no direct experience with recent MB diesels, my most current being an 85 300DT with its glorious 5 cylinder turbodiesel gem. Although Peugeot and Mercedes have bantered over the years as to who first mass-produced diesels, suffice it to say that Mercedes has been designing and building passenger diesels long enough to know what they're doing. I firmly believe that models like my diesel W123 are a large part of how Mercedes earned their reputation for engineering and for manufacturing quality automobiles. If you're going to own Mercedes vehicles, you owe it to yourself to enjoy a Mercedes diesel motor. Anyone and everyone seems to make fine gasoline engines these days. Enjoy a real engineering treat instead. The Germans build much more reliable Diesels than do the French. How many Peugots do you see in the paper for practically nothing? My 85 xj jeep cherokee had a Renault 2.1L Turbo Diesel. Impressive little motor, wet sleeved all aluminum jewel pumping out 85 hp, 115 ft lbs of torque. However, the sleeve KIT alone was $800!!! Compared to a Benz it was junk. My Rabbit Diesels were of better quality. Alec is also right about the DIESEL sound. There is nothing, NOTHING, like it. IT's addictive... :) I've had about 56 cars and trucks, I'd guess a little bit more than a dozen of those have been Diesels. :) Now, if they'll just put a Diesel in the ML series... :) john ============================================================= The just shall live by Faith...
