Peter: There are two possiblities that come to mind. First, the bulb may be bad. This is easy to fix. Remove the plastic panels under the dash on the driver's side. Reach up behind the instrument panel and undo the speedometer cable. Push the guage cluster out from the back...it just pops out. Now you have access to the bulbs. More likely, the fuel sender is oxidized. This is a messy task, but not beyond the amateur mechanic. To get to the fuel sender, undo the screws which hold the first aid kit to the back shelf. Remove the kit, and the top of the fuel tank is exposed. The big hex nut you see is the top of the fuel sending unit. Remove the electrical connection. Then undo the big nut (there's no need to drain the tank). You will need to use a plumber's adjustable wrench for this: the nut is very large. VERY IMPORTANT: once the sending unit is loose, withdraw it from the tank very, very slowly. It holds about a liter of fuel, and will empty very slowly. If you withdraw it quickly, you will end up with fuel on your upholstery. Disassembly of the sending unit is straight forward: undo the nut on the bottom, and remove the aluminum housing. You will find that a contact armature mounted on the float rides up and down a pair of resistance wires. Be very careful not to damage these wires. When it comes close to the bottom of the assembly, a contact triggers the dash light. Clean this contact with some sandpaper, reassemble, and you should be fine. The first step should be: - - Loosen fan shroud by removing the two stainless steel clips which hold it to the top of the radiator. Pull the shroud up to free the bottom tabs. The shroud may be left loose, there is no need to remove it. - - There is enough 'give' in the radiator hoses so they need not be removed. You must go to Keukenhof this spring, and of course bring your wife (if you have one) she'll love it. :) As far as the light, not sure if there is a test position on the ignition switch or not. Mine only lights when I get low on fuel. I'd try replacing the light and seeing if it works the next time. I use my trip odometer to monitor relative fuel consumption. Usually it comes on around 385 to 400 miles (that would be in the 600 to 700 km range if my conversion skills are still with me... let's see, 70 klicks is 43 mph. 60 klicks is 37 miles right? :) Oh, I just read that it comes up before igniting... haven't looked at mine. My guess is the sending unit assembly or the wiring from there to the guage is the problem. These guages are very unreliable below 1/2 tank. This would be a good time to replace the filter sock if there is one. :) Maybe someone else has some experience with this... john At 01:57 AM 12/28/98 +0100, Pieter Noorlander wrote: >Hi, > >John, sorry about the HTML text, i will better my life. > >I am located in a small town called Wijk bij Duurstede, near Utrecht in the >centre of the Netherlands, and btw I never went to the Keukenhof ;-) >I assume you are referring more to the size of my country than to the fuel >consumption of these Benzes... Didn't realize it was so easy to get to. I've been working on American iron for too long... you wouldn't believe what you had to go through on a Wagoneer, especially the 70's vintage, to get to the sending units... :) thanx, john At 08:56 PM 12/27/98 -0500, mfrank-at-westnet.com wrote: >Peter: > There are two possiblities that come to mind.
