They both have similar freeway commutes, and both cars are well maintained. In fact, Bob's car is better maintained than Dougs. Why the difference in MPG? Bob is a bit of a leadfoot, and although his car has a newer engine (the previous owner had it replaced) his mpg is lower because he drives faster. He also runs his AC 8 months out of the year. Doug, on the other hand, is a very patient driver. He drives like he's just kind of wandering around. His AC is shot, so he doesn't use it, except on the hottest days. Doug's car has the original engine, so it's not as efficient as it should be, but he still gets good mileage. Names have been changed to protect the innocent (me!) Anyway, I had this same condition, and I fixed it by replacing my pushbutton control unit in the dash. Chris, if you have the desire, buy a digital ohm/volt meter and the factory Heater/AC manual. The manual goes through the various tests you can do to determine the source of your trouble. The four areas I have re-worked on my '82 300D are: the fuse, the pushbutton controls, the mono valve and the fan motor brushes. As John indicated, there are electric/vacuum switchover valves that may be at fault, but I have not experienced a problem in that area.
