Mine is a pragmatic approach in getting the funds directly to Richard, that way there is no question about anything. Not that there even was a question! I want to clearly state that I think what you've proposed is fantastic and I believe that your intent was absolutely honorable. Why should you bother getting in the middle of things if we can get the funds directly to Richard? Think of the possiblity, you get the glory without the hassle! Bravo Bill! Thanx for your concern for Richard and taking action. john At 08:13 PM 1/5/99 -0500, Alfa Romeo Search and Rescue Society wrote: >I seem to have made the misjudgement that other digest members share the >same comradeship and assumed trust of other members that the Alfa Digest >does. ( The vacuum from the vacuum pump drives the brake booster, the engine shut-off valve and the central locking system) Over the past 3 years I have replaced the vacuum pump diaphram at least 5 times , each time the diaphram (when removed) has a split rendering the pump inoperative . The result is the pump then pumps oil to the air filter and floods the filter with engine oil which then overflows down the side of the engine and then onto the road. All very embarrassing. Not to mention the fact that you have no boost to the brakes and the engine cannot be shut off. The pump appears O.K.. there is now sharp parts to cause the split in the diaphram and the mechanical aspects of the pump appear O.K. as well. It has been suggested that the support washes (the big washes that go on either side of the diaphram) have been installed back-to-front, but I have tried every different combination, sometimes the diaphram lasting a little longer, but with no major diffference discernable. The last two times a mechanic and a Merc specialist told me which way too install them, alas the diaphram split again. Short of throwing the old pump away and fitting the later model which is quite different ( I believe it will fit with a bit of trouble), does anyone have any good ideas ??? Help !!!!!! Alan, The new style pump will fit the engine just fine but the pump gets in the way of the power steering belt. I found out the hard way.... I was replacing a '82 240D engine with one from a '77 240D. I thought it would be nice to have the newer pump on the engine specifically because of the diaphragm problems in the older pumps. Well, I bolted the vacuum pump up to the block and figured that I was in the clear... until I went to install the power steering pump belt. The newer vacuum pump was right in the path where the power steering belt was! I contemplated moving brackets and pulleys from the new block to the old block. It would have probably worked if the old block had all of the necessary holes for the newer brackets. To make a long story short, I still have the old style vacuum pump on the engine. Re: Oregon - small world... yep, bill emailed me off list... he's in the corvalis area. what's funny is he has relatives up in my area... :) small world, eh? There are very few places that I can go any more where I don't know someone. :) I've flown to Orlando, FL, a place I detest and only go there because my parents moved there from Illinois while I was in Germany... anyways, when I got to the airport it wasn't my folks or my sister or my brother in law that picked me up, nope. It was a friend from the FSJ list! :) I went to Chicago on a trip, and who did I visit with? Guys from the XJ list. :) (and lots of my relatives too... :) If I went to Sweden, Iceland, Finland, Denmark, Belgium, Luxemborg, Italy or Germany right now I'd be willing to bet that I'd be visting with someone from the FSJ, XJ or Diesel-Benz list. :) Small world... :) Today I had a support engineer up from Oregon to solve an applications issue and we started talking, turns out he was in the same brigage I was in Germany... he also spent time in disgusta, georgia... Funnier story, I was teaching at the Signal School in Georgia, had this one student, National Guard type... He'd party all night and then sleep in class. Didn't bother me, but some of the other students started complaining about his snoring. So I made him stand in the back of the room. He fell asleep standing up. The guy was a whiz at electronics though, he always did well on the tests. So, I get out of the army, head to Portland, start teaching at ITT Tech while attending Seminary and guess who walks into one of my classes... yep... he didn't sleep in class though, he was paying for it... :) At 09:13 AM 1/6/99 -0800, John Paul Broad wrote: >It is not (as I previously posted) UofO (where I went to school), but rather >OSU (in Corvallis, where I live now)!
