The FRAM filter number is CA3159. ($??) IMPCO's filter is $22.64 (haven't even asked the dealer. :) The correct AMSOIL special order part number is S1680. $30.95 I substituted a Two Stage AMSOIL filter part number TS89. $26.75 FWIW, the 240D, 300D and 300CD all take the same filters from about 76 until 82, with the 240D using the same filter until 83... The SD's take S1118 filters... I'll have to make a web page with the cross reference info to Fram and to substitutes so you can save some bucks... :) (I did something like this for the FSJ's: http://www.wagoneers.com/AMSOIL/FSJ_filters.html) What I did for Fritz was find the ID, inside Diameter of the filter and the overall height. I came up with the TS89 as a suitable substitute and have been running it in Fritz since I got him in July. The OD is smaller, but it fits in the air cleaner element properly and seals up nicely. I did the same thing on my 74 450SEL, the cheapest paper filter I could find was over $45!!! I found the ID and height and used a standard AMSOIL filter for about half the price and had a filter that is forever. Of course the car is under a tarp on a nearby mountain and hasn't moved for years, but the filter is still under warranty!!!! :) Someday my friend might actually decide to fix the car again... (exhaust manifolds were broken... long story) If you decide to get an AMSOIL filters let me know the Fram part number if you can find it, or measure the inside ID, height and OD of the current filter. With a little bit of effort, the FRAM Master Catalog and the AMSOIL catalog I should be able to find a filter that will work. It just takes time. :) Same goes for the flat filters, there is a safety margin in making these things fit because of the foam. And they can be returned or exchanged if they don't work... only problem is the hassle and the shipping... The idea here is to save you some money. I tried to get a special order filter for one of my turbo diesels and it was unavailable... but I found a substitute. :) These filters are warranted for LIFE. Not a million miles, 10 years or whenever you sell the car, but for life. If they fail, send the foam in for a replacement, no questions asked. Since 83 I've had to return one. And it was my fault. I was teaching a car care class and was showing off how durable the filter was and tore a corner of it by accident... I figured they wouldn't replace it because it was owner stupidity... didn't even ask me what happened, just gave me a new one. :) How many air filters will you buy in a Diesel car that lasts 250,000 miles? ttyl, john - ----------------------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com http://www.wagoneers.com 81 J10 / 81 300D / 88 wagoneer limited (xj) http://www.wagoneers.com/pages/john/Vehicle-History.html Snohomish, WA, where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... - ----------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Jan 1999 23:40:29 -0800 From: john Subject: data sheets on line fwiw: http://www.wagoneers.com/AMSOIL/TECH-SHEETS scanned in info on oil, filters, ATF, MP, etc... someone asked about the specs on the ATF... wander around in the directory, I also scanned in the latest catalog. john - ----------------------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com http://www.wagoneers.com 81 J10 / 81 300D / 88 wagoneer limited (xj) http://www.wagoneers.com/pages/john/Vehicle-History.html Snohomish, WA, where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... - ----------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ End of diesel-benz-digest V1 #71 ********************************
