My Glow plug controller/relay had fried during the simmer due to my voltage regulator allowing too much voltage. I let it slip by, because the car was easy enough to start in the warm weather w/o the glow pug preheating. We had a cold snap in the Vancouver, WA, area (we all know that Vancouver was here before Portland, OR, right?), and the car wouldn't't start. I had it towed (three cheers for AAA) to the shop, and they replaced the GP (glow plug) relay with a slightly faulty one. The GP relay should keep the glow plugs on for maybe 30-60 seconds after the engine catches, then shut off. It was staying on for about 10-15 minutes, and really draining down the battery, until the battery was ruined. After the GP relay was replaced and i got a new battery, all was well. Anyone wanting to find out if the glow plugs works at all on there car can perform a very simple test. Park the car in a dark garage or perform this test at night. It is best with a cold engine, but a warm engine might test properly, too. Raise hood. Turn the key to the run position, dash light for glow pugs should come on. Look at wires running from glow plug to glow plug and see if they are glowing red (I get it! Glow plugs, glowing wires!) If they aren't glowing, current is not flowing through the system. If they are glowing, the should glow for no more than 2 minutes. If you buy this by the case, you can register with the manufacturer as a case buyer, and they will guarantee the fuel not to gel or they will reimburse the cost of the towing. In all friendliness, John, does AMSOIL have that guarantee? I've never read any guarantee like that in their literature. :) Sounds like Howe's stuff is easier to use too. :) The stuff for our little Diesels is the Diesel Fuel Modifier, we get about two tanks to one bottle. Not too hard to use. But still kind of spendy if you were to use it all the time. The other two products are really designed for the big rigs, that's why it's not convenient to use... :) BTW, you didn't mention how much a case of that stuff was... :) Sounds like the guarantee isn't there unless you register and make an investment anyways... :) If I lived in cold country like some of you I'd certainly consider that option. :) I've never had a problem with gelled Diesel, but then again the coldest I've seen it around here is 15 degrees F too... I KNOW it gets colder than that back east, I grew up in Illinois/Wisconsin... :) > >Dan >kc7nol-at-juno.com >On Tue, 19 Jan 1999 23:56:24 -0800 john >writes: >>At 03:27 PM 1/19/99 -0600, Jon Filina wrote: >>>Evan was asking: >>>>>Am relatively new to the diesel world. >>>>Looking for suggestions for fuel additives to improve low-temp flow >>>>characteristics, engine longevity, and (if it's possible) >>performance. >> >> AMSOIL has three products that I've used and use. >> >>AMSOIL Diesel Fuel Concentrate - mainly aimed at big trucks, one >> can treats 150 to 200 gallons!!!! >>AMSOIL Cetane Boost - boosts the Cetane rating, also useful for >> lowering the pour point and reduces smoking and helps performance. >>AMSOIL Diesel Fuel Modifier - THIS IS THE ONE MOST OF YOU WILL WANT. >> Easy to use, designed for passenger cars.
