Years ago, when I was driving an '80 Volvo with an automatic, the tranny started to slip very badly, and take countable seconds to engage when cold. I was quoted approx. US$1500 for an r&r. Instead, I traded in that Volvo on a stickshift Ford Ranger. Haven't owned an automatic since. Judging by what I'm reading, I have saved myself a lot of trouble. I've lost 2 AT's. One I know I did in (neutral drops, etc.), the other because I'd been pulling out stuck Semi's and Dumptrucks (I'm not kidding - Old Blue). The problems I'm having with Fritz right now is a simple little problem, still a pain in the caboose. There are some benefits to a stick, like being able to bump start, downshifting and something to do while you're driving... but get caught in Seattle on I-5 or I-405 btwn 6am and 9pm and you'll be pleading to get out of your rig and hunting for an automatic transmission... :) Unless of course you can pace yourself in say 2nd gear and go between 5mph and 70mph without delaying traffic... All things considered, I'll take mine with the AT. Like they (used to?) say, different strokes for different folks... :) BTW, this is a common discussion on the 4x4 lists as well. Even some of the 4x4 mags "debate" this issue all the time. I've had some vehicles that I liked my manual, my BMW 2500, my VW Rabbit Diesels, and then there are those that I hated the manual... like the telephone line trucks, my 85 Cherokee with that little french turbo diesel and so on... :) adding fuel to the discussion (maybe we should start a thread on bias vs. radial tires, seems to me there used to be discussions along the same lines a "few" years back... :) bias=manual... :) john - ----------------------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com http://www.wagoneers.com 81 mercedes benz 300D (123) / 88 jeep wagoneer limited (xj) http://www.wagoneers.com/pages/john/Vehicle-History.html http://www.wagoneers.com/book-info.html Snohomish, WA, where Jeeps don't rust, they mold... - ----------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 Jan 1999 14:53:27 -0800 From: john Subject: Portland, OR Diesel shop Just cleaning up my office found a card from Northern Factors Corp.
