A good place though was the Parts Depot somewhere out East, e-mail me if you want their number, otherwise they advertize in Hemmings. Also, doing work on it is sort of tough--if you've had a Mercedes before then you will understand the lineage of everything afterwards, but if it's your first there will be quite a learning curve as there is not a Haynes manual for W115. _________________________________________ Eric Harry Hartz College of Architecture and Urban Planning 711 Catherine Street Ann Arbor, MI 48104 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 19:08:31 -0500 From: "Christopher M. The ammount of work needed and stuff like non-orig. carbs, fuel pump, etc made me pass. Not that I wouldn't love a Webber conversion. The price was right, though. $750! I can't help you at the wrecking yards... only for new parts. I have other parts distributers I can buy from as well, mostly Jeep, GM, ford, etc. Phil Smart has been decent to work with, turns out my neighbor's wife is related to the dealer. :) Another funny twist... the Parts delivery guy for the Jeep dealer is a nephew of Benz. :) small world, eh? john - -----Original Message----- From: Eric Harry Hartz [mailto:ehartz-at-umich.edu] Sent: Sunday, March 14, 1999 4:05 PM To: diesel-benz-at-digest.net Subject: Re: diesel-benz-digest V1 #106 I can't find much IMPCO stuff for my W115 '76 240D either. I live in Cape South Africa so when the weather is cold for you, it is hot for us! I have a 1979 Mercedes Benz 300D automatic with 285,000 kilometres and a 1985 300D manual with 230,000 kilometres, on the clock. Both cars are extremely reliable and simply run and run. Over the years I have dealt with a radiator leak on each, and a water pump replacement on one and accumulator brushes on the other, and that's about it! However, a correspondent complained recently that his odometer only worked when it is cold. The odometer on my wife's automatic stopped turning altogether. I removed it from the console (very easy: just pull it out forwards and unscrew the oil pressure gauge and the odometer cable. Clip off the electric wire connections) and took out the odometer. I figured if I tried to strip that I would end up with a heap of spares! So I drilled a half millimetre hole down between the teeth of the cog that was slipping, down to the unseen shaft on which turned and inserted a paper clip coated with super glue. That was many months ago and since then the odometer has been recording faithfully. I try to avoid resetting it except when the car is standing still. I suspect that it was designed to slip in the first place if re-set while the car is in motion. Keep up the good work, John. Answering all those letters must be close to a full-time job. Your advice on keeping cars is good and on leaving life is excellent! It's not so bad when you just forward them onto the lists... Before I quit editing pages for Off-Road.com I was spending 6 to 8 hours a day answering email and building web pages... I quit in Nov 97, feel like a free man now. :) ORC wasn't happy about my quitting and blocked me from accessing the two lists I started there... the FSJ and XJ lists... So I started them here on digest.net. When I sold "Old Blue", my 81 Wagoneer, and bought "Fritz", I felt the need for a diesel-benz list. :) I'm down in Milpitas, California this week taking a Perl class. :) Gonna head out and get dinner... ttyl, john - --------------------------------------------------------------------- john meister sr.
