A friend of mine has a 300E (?) 86 gas Benz (I know, some guys just don't get it...) anyways, :) he needs some help with his Becker Grand Prix Electronic radio... the thing keeps thinking it's been stolen. So he has to take it back to the dealer to have it reset. It's a beautiful smoke grey rig and he wants to keep it stock. It's nice, but it's still not a Diesel... :) Any ideas? - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- john meister sr. Arrgh! Driving around today I had two electric windows quit suddenly on my '85 300TD. Just happened to have an IMPCO catalog in the car, so I thought I could find out where the two relays are. This way, at worst I could switch the relays and at least get the windows back up again. Inop windows are diagonally apart- pass front/drivers rear. Problem: Diagram from catalog show relays above the drivers front wheel well. I open the plastic cover for the relay station, but find only one relay. Even this didn't have any effect on the windows; the remaining two still worked with it pulled. Does anyone know where the relays really are?? I dread having to pull the door panel off to 'hot wire' the window to get it back up, but I can't leave it open in my area overnight. Asked him if he had the relays in stock, and he asked if I checked the fuses, that there are three in the box..check the corners as well. Checked the corners and saw a good and truly corroded fuse in the suspect slot. (Homer says "...DOH!!") I HAD checked the fuse box and seen A fuse for the relays, checked it, saw it was good and moved on. Good side is that it only cost me a fuse I already had in the glove, a good-natured 'you idiot' laugh from my mechanic and the promise to check the fuses in the future. I tore a door completely apart trying to fix mine... It was the switch in the center console... TRY THAT FIRST. Pry up the switch and spray some electrical contact cleaner, AMSOIL MP, or WD-40 into the switches, wipe excess off as you manually operate them... See if that fixes the problem. Relays have a much higher reliablity than those rocker switches... john - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- john meister sr. (bad fuse) yeah, you looked at the fuses, but I didn't look at the next email... :) However, that brings up the point of corrosion on the fuses and connectors... Even on my little wagoneer (88 xj jeep) I had problems with windows and door locks... went through all the connectors with electrical contact cleaner and AMSOIL MP, lubricated all the window and lock mechanisms with a white spray lithium grease AND AMSOIL Silicon and I'm amazed at how much better everything is working. :) On fritz I just used the AMSOIL MP on contacts and switches and he's been fine since... john - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- john meister sr. I was terrified the first time I tried it. Just a little touch on the starter, turned it off and checked it out... it was loose... and nothing went flying... Shoot, you could just about spin the thing off if you cranked long enough... :) (HEY KIDS, remember to unplug the coil wire, or on a Diesel, the fuel solenoid on the injector pump... otherwise you won't be happy with the outcome... ;) Of course I was using my Craftsman 1/2 drive ratchet (large and heavy duty) with a 4 foot section of Schedule 40 or 80 (whichever is the heaviest) slipped over the end of it and resting against the ground or the frame, or wedged in between so it couldn't rotate and take out vital organs or parts. :) Remember, it was a mechanic that taught me this trick... :) I've got pictures of several of these tricks and will include them in the book... :) Which I should get back to work on... :) john - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- john meister sr. I'll hit it with a layer of silicone the next time I'm in there, though, and see if I can put a thin layer of dilectric grease on the fuse lid to help keep H2O out. FWIW, I've had good luck with, of all things, Armor-all for windows. Guinea pig was my old '93 Escort; window channels would bind, and silicone spray only helped for a couple of days. Between me and the dealer, we tried 5 different things. I tried armor-all out of desperation; it would typically work about 9 months or so. Thanks for the info AND for the work that goes into the list. Next stop, tachometer!!!
