At least I hit it w/undercoating- you have to look to see it doesn't belong. Will also be doing some other remedial rust work; found some over the front wheel (looks to be well away from serious structual areas), under the hyd. reservior and some behind the plastic wheel splash guard; all on the driver's side. Then to repaint. Where does one get POR-15?? Is it amail order thing? I know its rather expensive, but the alternatives... How does it idle? The bubbles could indicate a number of issues, leaking line, bad injector, bad filter, weak pump... or nothing more than you didn't bleed all the air out when you last changed the filter. :) When did you last change the filter? Do you have trouble starting it after it's been sitting? (If not that's a good thing... :) The soot could be a result of a bad spray pattern, too much fuel, bad timing, etc... or nothing at all... Does it smoke on hard acceleration? Pass emissions? What's the opacity? You may just have the pump dialed up a bit too much... :) (been there done that... :) That could also explain the "pinging"... Too much fuel can cause some issues you might think of as pinging... Have you tried running a Diesel Fuel treatment like AMSOIL Diesel Fuel Modifier or some of the stuff they sell at the Co-op to combat the soot? How many miles on the engine? Have you had the oil analyzed? Maybe you can run it by and I'll check it out, I'm right off of Highway 9 up in Clearview... It's probably not anything serious... How long have you had the rig? Is this your first Diesel? Have you had other Diesels? (I ask all these questions and five minutes under the hood and I'll have answered most of 'em... :) Sounds like you've covered the basic stuff already... Who's Abe -at- Mercedes??? Which dealer have you been working with? Phil Smart or the guys in Bellevue? There is also GP Automotive in Everett, and Benz Friends down in Seattle, as well as Jim Startups in Everett... let me know when you have some time... john At 09:51 PM 3/23/99 -0800, you wrote: >Hello John, > >Ran across your page while browsing for troubleshooting intermittent pinging >in my 1977 300D. > >If you have any ideas here is what I have checked: > >1.
