Depending on Fritz's model year, there may be a return hose from the vacuum pump to the intake manifold. If the diaphram in the pump is cracked (which does happen more often than you would think), oil will be pushed into the intake from the pump. About changin the valve stems... The valves springs are retained on the valves with a double locking nut system. A locking nut locks the tappet that is use to adjust the valve clearance. In order to get these nuts off you will defintely have to remove the rocker arm assemblies and cam shaft in order to pull the springs off the valves to get at the valve seals. The valve seals are a teflon boot type seal on all of the Mercedes diesels I've pulled apart. Even after 100K+ miles, these seals were always in good shape. I would suspect valves or rings if you got the blue cloud only on startups. Don't forget, the 22:1 compression will make just about anything burn clean after the engine is warm, even oil. Only when the compression gets low will you see oil always burning. As far as timing chain stretch goes, it will throw off the camshaft timing and the injection pump timing. I think that a problem in the timing of these two items would cause constant smoke problems. The injection pump timing is easy to solve... just re-time the pump (a 2 hour max job). If the camshaft timing is off, there are offset keys you can get from the dealer to compensate for it (up to 5 degrees or so if I remember correctly). In that case, find out how far the timing is off, get the correct offset key, and replace the original key with the offset key. This is also a fairly easy job. You would never be able to change the timing chain unless you had a master link in the chain or if you wanted to tear the engine down or cut the chain to get it off. There's a dump from my point of view... Just a bunch of things to consider. Jeff P.S. It passed emissions with flying colors after working on it. Tabs good until Dec 99. Solid body, driveline and engine. New tires and battery. Needs paint. I will finish fixing the brakes and steering/front end or reduce the selling price if not done. The gas guage works, but the wire to the sending unit isn't connected... just filled it up... :( don't want to drop a full tank down... I spent all my project money on camera equipment... :( couldn't help myself... :) Anyways, it's a solid runner and kinda cool. Hey, even the AM radio works. One piece Dana 44 axle in the rear with limited slip even! I've got to sell it so I can fix the picket fence, concrete the carport and have some cash for my dream FSJ... a short wheelbase J10 stepside, light colored, 258, at, ac... I'm open to trades for the right FSJ or project rig... and would even take concrete as a part trade... :) The Commando gets about 12 mpg... ready to roll. This thing would have no problem being driven across the country right now. I'll even through in a nice back cushion... :) I'm asking $3,500 based on what I've seen others going for. This thing is rare, solid and stock. I also need to sell it because I need to get some parts for the Benz... it needs a $250 climate control computer... john - ----------------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com http://www.wagoneers.com http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john http://www.wagoneers.com/book-info.html jesus, don't leave life without him, please!
