(I've heard it argued that it happens when you push the re-set button while the odo is moving???) DIY repair would be tricky, unless you're really good at working on tiny stuff. To have it fixed, you'll have to pull the console & remove the speedo. There are several places that will repair. I had mine done in Atlanta (think it was called The Benz Store), for $45, one-day turnaround, plus two days each way shipping. Palo Alto Speedo (Star advertiser) also does it. Also some place n Texas (can't remember the name). Both the trip and the totals stopped, so I assume it is not in the counters themselves, but somewhere earlier in the line. Where should I start looking? Is it a DYI job? Banging the dash doesn't help :) TIA, Pieter '83 300TD (Hermann) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 11:06:38 -0400 From: "Schreck, Daniel, CSCIO" Subject: 190, 300 Hi. I'm new to the list, and new to Mercedes-Benz autos. I'm considering the purchase of a mid-80's diesel, probably a 190D or 300D. Anyone have any advice on things to look out for, or particular years to avoid on either of these models? My only experience with diesels has been a '78 diesel Rabbit, which was one of the most reliable, low-maintenance cars I've owned. Reasons I'd like to find another diesel automobile are longevity, MPG, and low cost of diesel fuel in New Jersey (for the moment). MB tops my list for longevity which is why I'm considering one. Any thoughts anyone could share would be appreciated. Thanks Dan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 11:52:03 -0400 From: Evan Subject: elec gremlin found! okay! woo woo! the alternator has three wires coming out of the back. 2 are heavy duty and meet the battery cable at the solenoid post. (redundancy? extra current capacity?) The third apparently triggers the 'battery' light on the dash. It had NO insulation, and was shorting back to the battery. Gee, the other side of the battery light goes to ground. Splice installed. Problem resolved. Thanks for all the help, Evan ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 12:35:28 -0400 From: "Ron Dwelle" Subject: Re: 190, 300 I personally thought the early (1984-85) 190Ds were a little chintzy. The 82-85 300Ds are generally better cars, in my opinion. The 1987 190 turbo is a nice car. The 1987 300D is next on my wish list, but I think they tend to be overpriced by quite a bit. - -----Original Message----- From: Schreck Daniel CSCIO To: diesel-benz-at-digest.net Date: Friday, April 23, 1999 11:06 AM Subject: 190, 300 Hi. I tried resetting directly after I found out it stopped counting, but that was while I was driving (!! Now I know that wasn't such a good idea). Didn't work then, but I tried again after the car sat for a while and 'repaired' it.... :) Both the trip and the main odometer are running again - for now... Thanks to everyone for the replies, l will keep them in a safe place, I suspect that I might need them in the future... And I will NEVER reset the odometer again while the car is moving :-) Maybe I should have mentioned that I'm living in the Netherlands, so references to the STAR and US repairs aren't much use for me... Thanks for the effort anyway! (In Washington state with have $.43 (43 cents) worth of state and federal taxes on our Diesel!!! Gasoline only has about $.23 worth... will have to double check... ANYWAYS, I found a Shell on 164th in Mill Creek (south of Everett, WA) that has Diesel for $1.29 ! The Texaco up on 180th & SR 9 was $1.33. In Snohomish the Texaco was up over $1.44 something... Didn't check the Shell in Snohomish... Makes me want to clean out the tanks on my little pickup bed utility trailer and fill 'em up... :) Probably should anyways... was going to put an electric pump on it and fill the lawnmower with it. Have an extra tank, could make one diesel, one stinky old gas... :) Since I recovering from a bad cold will probably take Fritz up to Mt. Vernon tomorrow to tiptoe through the Tulips... I'll park the 72 Commando up on the highway with a For Sale sign on it before I go... :) later, john - ----------------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com http://www.wagoneers.com http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john http://www.wagoneers.com/book-info.html jesus, don't leave life without him, please! I usually go there for fuel no matter how much they cahrge because they always have fresh, non contaminated fuel. They sell alot of fuel to truck drivers, so the fuel isn't sitting in the ground with algae and bacteria growing in it to plug my filters. Also, if they sold bad (fuel that made the trucks run poorly), fuel, the truck drivers would stop buying fuel there, and that is the #1 profit making item for them. I'll stop buying fuel there when the professional drivers stop buying fuel there.
