Man, I lucked out twice this weekend. 1st, Rusty got the fan clutch to me from GA before the weekend, and then when I found out that the water pump had gone too I was figuring I'd have to wait until Tuesday to get Fritz back on the road... I called Phil Smart this morning and left voice mail and figured I'd be gardening instead of wrenching... So I called again, got the parts guy, and the list on the water pump is only $31 BUCKS!!! The core charge is $40!! go figure. :) Anyways, from what the parts guy described replacing a water pump on a 300D will be a snap compared to an AMC 360 V-8 or the 4.0L, or a GM front wheel drive... I just looked at my factory service manual... wow. simple. piece 'o cake. I love my Benz... :) Ya know, I may just think about going into wrenching on these things for hire. I've mostly been doing Jeep projects, buy one, fix it up, sell it, move to the next. But as easy as these Benz's are to work on I may just invest in some more manuals and tools and do limited public work... :) john - ----------------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com http://www.wagoneers.com http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john 77 Wagoneer (SJ) - 81 MB 300D (123) - 88 wagoneer (xj) jesus, don't leave life without him, please! Man, that was the easiest water pump I've ever replaced. :) Pulled the fan, 4 bolts, two clips to pull the shroud. Move the pulley off with the belt. 5 bolts and pop off the pump assy. Reverse. Didn't have to adjust belts or anything... :) john - ----------------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com http://www.wagoneers.com http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john 77 Wagoneer (SJ) - 81 MB 300D (123) - 88 wagoneer (xj) jesus, don't leave life without him, please! In trying to fix my vacuum system a while back I found the shifting changed... :) So today when picking up the water pump I picked up one of the vacuum switches on the top of the valve cover. They list for $40.32 (Rusty should be able to get them a bunch cheaper). On the 81 300d there are three of them. I just tested Fritz out and noticed an improvement in the third shift, AND when I down shift manually, it actually downshifts now. It didn't before unless I was standing on the go pedal. :) Cool. I can actually use my engine for braking now. :) Sunny weekend in Snohomish... strange... it's really bright outside. :) Hey, June 5th I'm having an FSJ/XJ Fest at my place here in Snohomish. Maybe we ought to do something like that with our Diesels sometime. :) Hey, John Paul, noticed your planned Oregon Coast Trip in the Bi-Monthly Update for the Seattle Section (Jun 99). :) Where are you starting the run? Which way are you going, north or south? Hope the weather works out for you. :) john ------------------------------------------------- diesel-at-wagoneers.com - http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john http://www.wagoneers.com/DieselBenz/ Snohomish, WA - where Jeeps and Diesel Benz' don't rust, they mold... ------------------------------------------------- http://www.digest.net/diesel-benz/ (81 300D) ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 May 1999 22:56:55 -0700 From: "John Paul Broad" Subject: RE: Oregon Coast trip Hey there John & other "Oilers"! :) You all can download the MSWord doc from ftp://ftp.mbca-portland.org/CoastTrip.doc which contains all the details one should need to get in on the trip! As for John's question . . . it looks like we'll be having a caravan out to Newport. I think it will start in Wilsonville (south end of Portland) and come on down to our place in Corvallis by about 10:30am on Saturday. From here we'll distribute the FC radios, take a few pictures, do a brief technical check and head out to make it to Newport by around Noon. Should be lots of fun! One thing not mentioned in the doc or the newsletter is that it looks like we will be able to have a "five-point star" driving test while we are out there. For anyone who hasn't done this before it is either a hoot or REALLY frustrating but always gives you a better idea of where the "corners" are on your vehicle! I'll have a Western Caravan Announcement (with a location for registration packets) coming soon! I haven't had time to research specifics, but I still believe that a gas engine of similar displacement will put out more NOx than a comparable Diesel engine. If not then help me out with some facts. The data I have from the mid 80's contraindicates what you are saying. john At 11:04 AM 5/30/99 -0700, James Blair wrote: >A: I also forgot to mention that NOx is one of the primary components of=20 >acid rain!=20 > writes: >I think Jim covered that pretty well.=20 ><<=20 >There is a editorial written by the editor in the front of this month's >Car and Driver Mag. on modern diesel developments.
