A tyre bouncing excessively will be warmer than those running true. This is not an exact science, of course - under-inflated tyres can warm up also. But it's a good place to start. My experience of worn u-joints tells me that you should be getting a sort of 'thrubbing' sensation (now there's a highly technical term!) at any speed, and it can be felt through the seat of your pants. Good hunting. ___________________________________________________________ Euan Kennedy 5 Banks Avenue Shirley Christchurch 8006 New Zealand Ph 64 3 385 5714 E-mail (hm) euan-at-chch.planet.org.nz E-mail (wk) kennede-at-lincoln.ac.nz ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Jul 1999 22:46:17 -0700 From: john Subject: winder update... I tried to piece the broken part back in, finally gave up. Will need to replace the motor assembly... What's really bad is that I just replaced this thing when I got Fritz... I used the wrecking yard's unit after finding out that the original problem was the switch... arghhh... Maybe I can get my old one back... yeah, right... ;) Anyways, so I stuffed some foam down in the bottom of the window... so now it's a manual window... :) john - ----------------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com http://www.wagoneers.com http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john 77 Wagoneer (SJ) - 81 MB 300D (123) - 88 wagoneer (xj) jesus, don't leave life without him, please! Well, it seems that I've found the source of this legend. :) He recorded the story (excluding of course incriminating details, as explained in the story.) BTW, it was a 59 chevy... anyways, it is long, but enjoyable reading. http://www.wagoneers.com/pages/RocketCar (thanx Rocket Man for letting me put the story on wagoneers.com ! :-) john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- john-at-virtual-cafe.com **** Snohomish, Washington USA don't leave life without jesus, please... http://www.virtual-cafe.com/~john http://wagoneers.com - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jul 1999 22:24:55 +0200 From: "Pieter Noorlander" Subject: Rocking 300D There's some serious rocking going on under the hood of my '83 300TD - enough to make the whole car shake at idle. The hotter the engine, the heavier the rocking (doesn't get hotter than 90 Deg C). It doesn't idle roughly, IMHO, it just rocks. It's less when the car is in gear with the brakes applied or moving slow and it's gone when moving faster. At speed it is *very* smooth, you have to pay attention to notice you're in a diesel. It seems to be getting worse, so I figure I'll have to (let someone) do something about it before the engine jumps out of the car one day :) It gives quite a lurch at shutting off, too. Replaced engine and tranny mounts +/- 3000 miles ago. That got rid of all other vibration problems, but the rocking at idle got worse since then. I don't know if it can be related, but starting is not as good as it was either. I now have to push the accelerator a bit to make a quick start. Before I could start the car by just touching the ignition switch. Maybe I was spoiled :) Some miscellaneous data: Oil usage: less then a quart on 1000 miles. Smoke: just a little under heavy acceleration. MPG: 26 207K miles on the odometer. Any wisdom from the list? As you may have noticed, I don't have a clue here, so all help is appreciated :) TIA, Pieter Noorlander '83 300TD - 'swinging' Hermann ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jul 1999 13:31:39 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: Re: Rocking 300D timing, mounts can't think of much else... The parts guy at the dealer assured me there was only on type of mount and did not know what the number meant. But I can Imagine that the lighter diesel and gas engines use different mounts. I think I'll go and have a chat with him again... I posted a message about it then, but got no reply on that one.
