However, in this era of post-modern license with basic linguistic commodities, our view is only relative and if we say we know the truth, we will be labeled a hateful, narrow-minded, intolerant bigot. So a duck is only a duck when you embrace his world view, otherwise, it's just a bunch of funny looking parts. ==================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Jul 1999 20:33:20 PDT From: Daniel A Jacobs Subject: Re: Using oil in a new car is nothing to be concerned about. The piston rings have to wear in a little before oil consumption lessens or disappears altogether. I am not sure about the newer mbz diesels, but when my '79 300d was new(er), We would sometimes add a quart of oil depending on how hard it was being driven. In fact .I think I remember the owners manual saying that oil consumption goes up when the engine is operated at higher rpms (driven hard or fast). As far as the color is concerned, the oil will always be black, even after an oil change, that is the nature of the diesel beast. About the only thing to watch out for on the dipstick is the presence of fuel odor in the oil. I have taken my car to MBI in SE Portland in the past when I needed repairs I could not or would not make. They charge the same as Rasmussen MBZ, but not as long a waiting list to get the car in their shop. They will check the major systems on a used car for $70 (if my memory is correct). This includes a compression check, brakes, climate control, body/paint, interior, etc., etc. I think it is a reasonable price to pay, and they only work on mbz, so they would more than likely know about any mbz product you where thinking about. Between, roughly, 40 and 80 degrees both of my VW's and now my 240D got optimum mileage. The Rabbit got 45-50 mpg, the Jetta, 42-46, and my MB (which I've only driven since Feb. '98) 33-35. If the temperature went below 40, or above 80, my mileage dropped a few mpg. Now, it's been quite a few years, I don't remember my gas powered cars being temperature sensitive....they may have been, but I don't remember it. Send some of your rain our way....it'll help drop out temps! Can anyone recommend a kind of window tinting (and prices if known) and what to watch out for when buying it (installation info, brands to watch out for, ect.) Also, is there any good solutions to protecting the paint from the weather. What is my 81 300D with 140,000 miles worth approximately? Rust is not even in our vocabulary up here, unless of course the car was kind of brown in color. :) Most everything is working as designed, still have a couple minor repairs to make. New MXV4's and alloys, along with a complete set of steel wheels and studded tires (with hubcaps...) I'm trying to decide whether to buy a 300SD, a 90 Grand Wagoneer, or sell off all my projects and parts and buy into a newer VW turbo Diesel... If this is a mid-life crisis kind of thing I'm gonna live a long time... it's been going on since I was introduced to the wheel... :) I'm up to 60 cars or so already... I think what's driving this is the window and the climate control... :) That and I've had my 77 Wagoneer since June and I'm still haven't gotten the right carb adapter to mount the Edelebrock carb... (soon as I do I'm gonna sell that project too... :) thanx for humoring me... john - ----------------------------------------------------- john-at-wagoneers.com http://www.wagoneers.com ...don't leave life without Jesus, please!
