I hear the Environmentalist Whacko wheme song that Rush Limbaugh plays from time to time here...if unfamiliar, its 'Bad to the Bone' by Lonesome George set to chainsaws in full song. Along to cries of 'Timber!' and trees crashing to the groung as background. OK, let the match throwing begin... Before and after was about the same as yours, 45 mpg. My '90 Jetta got about 47 for the same 50k period and settled for 42-43 before and after. The TDI's are awesome, from what I've heard. The also cost more than my '81 240D did when it was new. Add to that the tight clearances around the engine, and I'm very happy with "Mathilde"... If I were in the market for a new diesel, I would seriously take a look at the Jetta and Passat TDI's. I'm not (I like not having a car payment, per se) so I won't!
