I've decided to sell my 81 300D. I've found another Jeep pickup I want and a 300SD. So I'm selling off my current fleet and zipping all over the country to pickup my new toys... well, that's the plan... reality may not be the same. :) 77 Wagoneer, as is $1,000, w/new carb $1,500 81 300D, $4,500 obo - lots of new stuff, like MXV4s, etc. (I've got to fix the driver's side window mechanism, parts coming tonight, and replace the temp sensing tube, otherwise everything works...) (keeping my 88 wagoneer ltd (xj). :) hoping to get an 80 J10 and either an 82 or 83 300SD. Working a trade deal... gonna pick up a used cherokee to trade for one of the 300SDs... :) I'm most excited about the J10 though. Looked at one on Saturday, but it was more work than I wanted right now. :) I'm waiting for pictures for the other one (out of state). later, john ====================================================================================== To subscribe to a list on digest.net, EMAIL majordomo-at-digest.net, no subject needed, in the body: subscribe [ fsj | xj | diesel-benz ] end (note: select only one of the options in the brackets) You will need to reply to an authentication message. Either I accidentally got on the rich folks list, or owning a (big) car in the U.S. is WAY cheaper than in the Netherlands. Over here, a 1500 kg Diesel powered car like my 300TD will cost you the equivalent of $180,- per month, just to OWN (road tax and -the cheapest- insurance). It doesn't move an inch for that money. A petrol car will be $50,- cheaper. A litre (0.26 gallon) diesel costs like $0.75. Parts and repair costs not mentioned here. There is no way I can own a second car like this, unless I take a second job as well :( So, is the car owning climate that much better on your side of the big pond? The only way you will see a Dutch student in a Mercedes is in the back of a police car (there are many C-Class police cars now), after a student's riot :) Groeten uit Holland, Pieter ================================================ Live slow, die old. Hacker, Willow Park, Texas) >-->================================================ Excellent observation. It is relatively cheap over here. Here's a breakdown of what I have and pay for several older vehicles. I'll estimate the costs for owning newer. 1988 Jeep Wagoneer Ltd. - 4.0L - 194,000 miles 1988 Buick Regal Custom - 2.8L - 160,000 miles (my daughter's car) 1981 Mercedes Benz 300D - 3.0L - 140,000 miles 1977 Jeep Wagoneer - 5.9L - 130,000 miles The 77 Wagoneer is NOT insured or licensed at this time. Total annual car insurance is about $2,200 with full coverage on everything insured but the Buick, it has comprehensive and liability. The ANNUAL license costs on the cars in Washington state is about: 88 Jeep - $179 88 Buick - $139 81 Benz - $98 77 Wag (if licensed) - $61 We are going to vote on imposing a $30 a year registration fee. Oregon only charges about $20(?) a year for tags. For Gasoline/DIESEL fuel Washington state has one of the highest taxes imposed, about .23 cents a gallon, in addition to the Federal taxes of about .20 cents per gallon. (still a bargain compared to anywhere in Europe). So, we pay insurance (liability is mandatory), registration and fuel costs. Maintenance varies. Also, it will be interesting to see the variations across the states. Some places place excise tax on the vehicle's value for licensing, others don't. Some fuel taxes are lower, others aren't. :) Diesel fuel here in my area is running 1.39 to 1.49 dollars per gallon. Unleaded gasoline (87 octane) is running about 1.41 and up. This will be an interesting thread. john ---- - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- john-at-wagoneers.com **** Snohomish, Washington USA don't leave life without jesus, please... http://wagoneers.com - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Aug 1999 21:49:45 ADT From: "Brad McCallum" Subject: Buying a diesel....what to look for?? Hi there, I am planning to get a diesel benz and I was wondering what diagnostic tests I can perform in the driveway. Someone E-mailed me about plugging the black hose on the valve cover, but I've forgoten the name of the person (from europe) and how long it can be plugged before the engine dies. I deleted the message it got purged out of my trash bin. The 1982 240d I was looking at began to stall after ~7 seconds. Is that good/bad?? thank's for the info and any other stuff I can use. later, Brad ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Aug 1999 20:23:09 -0700 From: john Subject: Re: Buying a diesel....what to look for??
