Two problems sorta emerged... 1) the jeep didn't have a new engine, but one with 65,000 miles on it, and it's one of those lousy 2.8L chevy v6s... 2) my sun sys admin quit so I can't take vacation even if it would have worked out... :( So I guess by default I'm keeping fritz... seems to be working ok... Trying to buy a Jeep J10... have a friend in Portland looking at a 64 tonight. If it works out I may try to make it a Diesel, etc... then I may part with Fritz at that point. :) Oh well... in the meantime wrestling with computers and dreaming about the ultimate rigs... :) (Haven't completely written off the idea of getting a Turbo Diesel setup for Fritz... with only 142,000 miles on the clock he just keeps on keeping on... ;) later, john - ----------------------------------------------------- john-at-wagoneers.com http://www.wagoneers.com ...don't leave life without Jesus, please! Burani" Subject: '79 300D transmission I am experiencing some strange noises that I think are related to the automatic transmission in my '79 300D. The car was barely driven (by another owner) for the first eighteen years of its life, and I bought it in 1997 with 29k miles on it. In two and a half years since, it's still only up to 67k. That is, kind of early for transmission problems, especially since this car has mostly highway miles on it. But one out of every hundred times I start the car, between the time I start the ignition and the car is in drive, I hear a huge grinding noise, about 2-3 seconds, which makes me feel like the car is about to fall apart. I can feel the vibration in the gear selector. Has anyone experienced similar problems? If so, it may be that you have a bad starter drive or ring gear on the flywheel. Please elaborate. Quinn ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Aug 1999 01:55:34 +0800 From: "JOEL S. VILLANUEVA" Subject: Re: bob's bounced message... :) Hello Bob! The center position is OFF, first turn clockwise is for the park and instrument panel lights, next turn will add the headlights, pulling them out in any of these positions will turn on the front fog lights, if it has a second pull, it will turn on the rear fog light...( I think this are only available in European versions)...Turning the light handle anti-clockwise will turn on the park lights when you have pulled out your key or the ignition switched is in the '0' position, first turn anti-clockwise will turn on the right side park lights, second turn the left side...I think in Germany, if you park in a street during night time, you have to turn on the park lights, the side away from the curb....I not sure if it is a law but all the German cars I have seen have them.... I myself have a '83-'84 240D...it is registered as an '84 model but the documents form MB Germany states that it came out from the factory October 83....don't know why it was registered as so... After oil change, oil gets dark real quick, can see it on the dipstick. We looked and the only thing that doesn't get drained is the leftover oil in the cooler in front of the drivers side front wheel. Is there a way to purge the old oil? No cooler on my white '92 190E 2.6, so oil stays clean. Any ideas welcome. thanks Alex ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Aug 1999 13:55:36 -0700 (PDT) From: john Subject: Re: oil cooler flush In all the Diesels I've owned, whether they've been a Benz, a wabbit, a GM, GMC, Renault, farm tractors or whatever... they've all had dark oil... I've flushed, I've cleaned, I've added Bypass Filters, I've used dino, synthethic and a mixture... It always gets dark quickly. The only way I can see a Diesel not dirtying it's oil quickly after a change is if it's real tight or real new... never had either one. :) john On Thu, 19 Aug 1999, alex.abbott wrote: >-->Hello all- >--> Im writing in behalf of my dad's dark blue '92 300D Turbo MB, >-->he's not too internet saavy, but I told him that this list might help >-->out. >--> >-->After oil change, oil gets dark real quick, can see it on the >-->dipstick. It is not a problem and should be considered normal. Someone please correct me if that's not the case. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Aug 1999 16:03:47 -0700 From: Farnes_Quinn Subject: RE: oil cooler flush My Diesel rabbit was like that, too. Oil was always BLACK. I even filtered some waste oil through a 0.2 micron laboratory filter just to see if I could clean the carbon out of it. The oil went right through, and while it left the filter black, indicating it had removed some particles that were larger than 0.2 microns in diameter, the filtrate was just as black as before. I agree with Chuck's statement. I've always been told not to worry about the color of lubricating oil in a Diesel. I imagine probably what's happening is that the small quantity of gas that blows by the rings and ends up in the oil doesn't have time to completely burn, so leaves carbon soot. Sort of the same thing when you tromp on the throttle. Too much fuel present for the limited quantity of oxygen to burn. Hence, smoke. In the FWIW (for what it's worth) department: During WWII (the Big One), when all U.S. submarines were powered by Diesels, they apparently didn't change the oil, they just filtered it and changed out the filters regularly. q. > -----Original Message----- > From: Chuck Lanter [SMTP:cll2-at-micron.net] > Sent: Thursday, August 19, 1999 3:27 PM > To: alex.abbott; diesel-benz-at-digest.net > Subject: Re: oil cooler flush > > > > > Hello all- > > Im writing in behalf of my dad's dark blue '92 300D Turbo MB, > > he's not too internet saavy, but I told him that this list > might help > > out. > > > > After oil change, oil gets dark real quick, can see it on the > > dipstick. Are the bearings replaceable or do you have to purchase a new/remanufactured turbocharger? Sold my '87 Camry the other day. Getting closer to having the cash to buy my 300D!
