Burani To: diesel-benz-at-digest.net Date: Thursday, August 19, 1999 8:48 AM Subject: '79 300D transmission I am experiencing some strange noises that I think are related to the automatic transmission in my '79 300D. The car was barely driven (by another owner) for the first eighteen years of its life, and I bought it in 1997 with 29k miles on it. In two and a half years since, it's still only up to 67k. That is, kind of early for transmission problems, especially since this car has mostly highway miles on it. But one out of every hundred times I start the car, between the time I start the ignition and the car is in drive, I hear a huge grinding noise, about 2-3 seconds, which makes me feel like the car is about to fall apart. I can feel the vibration in the gear selector. Has anyone experienced similar problems? Is this the third seat in the rear? The car has this, but I know that it can be retro-fitted, I'm just wondering if it is original. (Was: Option Codes) > Date: Sun, 22 Aug 1999 00:37:23 -0700 > Reply-to: diesel-at-mbz.org Hello John, option code 220 stands for "door contact rear doors" meaning that there are additional contact switches fitted to the rear doors in order to switch the rear dome light on when a rear door is opened. Option code 844 means indeed that on a T-Model (station wagon or "estate" as we call it here in the UK) that they fitted an additional foldable seat bench in the rear (844 means inclusive of 3 additional headrests). If these codea are on the data card of the car, it means that this was fitted ex factory. I am looking into a D5W hydronic for mine. Prices seem to be around the 1k mark, for the kit. Also, does anybody know the final drive ratio for the early 80s 300D, 300SD std and turbo? Also max rpm? Also, what do people know about the "idle stabiliser screw" thing? I have been told it is great thing to replace, being a 20 dollar part, and it can make you run much smoother. I have one for the 300SD I am driving (not my car) but do not know where to put it.
